If high-quality vintage or vintage-inspired statement pieces are your cup of tea, look no further—every carefully curated piece here tells a story

There are good reasons why Emperor’s Attic is a consistent winner of Tatler Singapores Best of Singapore award and the Expat Living Readers’ Choice award; owner Chantal Travers was also one of The Finder's Expatpreneur eAward 2020 winners.

The one-of-a-kind furnishings retailed here make outstanding statement pieces and family heirlooms. They are personally sourced by Travers and her team from small community and family-run workshops in northern China: each individual piece is carefully authenticated as a genuine antique, vintage, or reproduction, made or finished by a traditional artisanal craftsman. These sturdy, well-weathered elm, pine, and poplar wood products are practically guaranteed to last for generations.

The beautiful ceramics stocked at Emperor’s Attic are also traditionally made in independent potteries in remote Jingdezhen, which has been a stronghold of Chinese ceramics production for more than 10 centuries due to its high-quality “porcelain stone” deposits, a network of water systems, and thriving pine forests which provide wood for the traditional kilns.

Travers also retails a range of Singapore- and Asian-inspired artworks by a number of locally-based artists, including Louise Hill, Deborah McKellar, Diana Francis, John Mathis, and Mishell Leong. In fact, 2020 saw the soft launch of a new range of artisanal lamps: Lampton (@lampton_ on Instagram) features ginger jar lamps combined with handmade fabric lampshades.

With such a diverse selection of wares, it’s no wonder that the store’s discerning clientele—from expatriates to wealthy locals, designers, and art collectors—keep coming back for more; after all, they share an appreciation for the rich history and/or cultural eclecticism that each piece found at Emperor’s Attic brings with it. And now, with the store’s spanking new e-commerce platform that was launched in 2020, finding exciting new additions for your home décor has never been easier!

Keep an eye open for news of a potential re-launch of Emperor’s Attic’s special Meet The Artist events as the Covid-19 situation continues to evolve. First on the cards, once this is possible, is a showcase for Mishell Leong and her recently launched lithograph collection A Garden From Within.

3 Interesting Facts about Emperor’s Attic

  1. It was previously named FairPrice Antique to highlight a commitment to fair pricing. Travers renamed it in March 2018—partly due to people mistakenly thinking the store was affiliated to NTUC FairPrice—and the store remains dedicated to providing value-for-money products and top-notch service.
  2. The word “emperor” was chosen for the brand name because “Chinese emperors were based in northern China, and we only buy from the north”. Travers explains that the connotation of “special hidden treasures” was the reason behind the word “attic”.
  3. The brand’s flagship store at Tan Boon Liat Building is also where you can try out and purchase premium latex mattresses under the label Willow Mattress; as Travers is also the founder and owner of this business, you can be sure of its ethical and quality standards!
