Cover The Spotlight Squad for Breitling Chronomat ladies collection: Charlize Theron, Misty Copeland and Yao Chen

The Breitling Chronomat 32 and 36 are the first in the collection to be designed exclusively for women

During a recent webcast hosted by Breitling CEO Georges Kern, actress and philanthropist Charlize Theron was wearing the new Chronomat 36 with a diamond-set bezel. When Kerns asked her about the watch, she jokingly said, "Well, Georges, you made another terrible watch," before adding: "It's a stunner! The thing that I love about it is the duality of it. It's classic yet modern."

One of Hollywood's most luminous stars today, Theron could very well be describing herself. Already part of the Breilting Cinema Squad alongside Brad Pitt and Adam Driver, she has been chosen to personify the ladies Chronomat. Joining her on the Spotlight Squad for the new Chronomat are American ballerina Misty Copeland and Chinese actress Yao Chen, who was one of Time magazine's Most Influential People in 2014.

The Chronomat has a history that goes all the way back to the 1940s, but the design that we see today is based on its revival in the 1980s when the four rider tabs were included on the bezel at 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock; they have since become the watch's signature design element.

Earlier this year, the sports chronograph also brought back the Rouleaux bracelet with its retro-ish cylindrical links and butterfly clasp.

The rider tabs and the Rouleaux bracelet are present in the ladies collection, and though refined for a slender wrist, they maintain that robust energy that led Copeland to declare: "It feels like a men's watch. I could dress it up or be really casual with it."

The collection features only an automatic for the 36mm and a Superquartz for the 32mm—for now at least. The automatic is powered by the Breitling Caliber 10 with 42-hour power reserve while the quartz boasts a battery life of three to four years.

Case materials include stainless steel, 18k red gold or a combination of both. There are numerous dial colours, from white and copper to green and midnight blue, with diamond-set versions to complement your evening gown.
