Fashion designer Jessicacindy Hartono loves feminine details in both her creations as well as her wardrobe

Step into Jessicacindy Hartono’s wedding atelier and you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported into a bridal fantasy. Tulle confections greet you at the door, alongside vases of dried flowers and a huge, ornate wooden mirror. Three pairs of designer heels lay in front of a pedestal used for brides-to-be to try on their gowns while surrounded by racks and racks of ethereal dresses—it’s like a wedding Pinterest board come to life.

The go-to gown designer for local celebrities and influencers alike, Jessicacindy’s designs have been worn by media personalities such as Joanne Peh and Liv Lo on various occasions. She is also a familiar name among the society set, with Tjin Lee, founder and managing director of Mercury Marketing & Communications, choosing to wear her gown to the Singapore Tatler Ball 2018, and lawyer Angelina Tan rocking a pink creation at her wedding last year. One of her bespoke gowns even made its global debut last year on homegrown actress Fiona Xie at the Los Angeles premiere of the smash romantic comedy, Crazy Rich Asians. And it’s difficult not to see why. The Indonesian-born designer has built up a repertoire of dramatic, showstopping confections, from bridal wear to red-carpet dresses, each one more intricate than the last.

Now based in Singapore, Jessicacindy credits her formative years in Shanghai for her love of fashion. “While my first foray into fashion was when I designed and made clothes for my dolls, and then later my friends and family when I was growing up in Indonesia, it was upon further education in Shanghai that I truly fell in love with the art of dressmaking, particularly bridal and evening couture.” In 2010, armed with the fundamental knowledge and skills of the craft, Jessicacindy established her eponymous label in Singapore.

Surprisingly, her designs don’t exactly reflect her personal style, unless she’s heading out for a special event. “While my creations tend to be dramatic, how I dress depends on the occasion,” she explains. Jessicacindy loves to experiment with her clothes and doesn’t limit herself to one particular style. This is evident in the products she brought to this shoot, which range from a classic black leather Dior Saddle bag, to a striking pair of gold Dolce & Gabbana heels with metal flowers. At the moment, she’s leaning towards more feminine designs, citing Alice McCall and For Love & Lemons as some of the brands she has on rotation. She’s also into details like feathers and puff sleeves as they add an air of romantic femininity that she really likes.

When the occasion calls for it, she has no issues piling on the glamour, having a penchant for details such as feathers, tulle and lace. The massive ruffled tulle gown she got married in is a case in point—and of course, it’s a Jessicacindy creation. “I completely entrusted the designing and crafting of my wedding gown to my team. I only saw it for the first time on my wedding day and it was truly one of the best surprises!”
