The German watch brand is charming connoisseurs with its immaculate hand-finishes

In Dresden, the historical capital city of the German state Saxony, lies Lang & Heyne, a small watch manufacture that prides itself on crafting beautiful watches assembled and finished by hand. “We combine renowned Saxonian watchmaking heritage with superlative finishing,” remarks CEO Alexander Gutierrez Diaz. “More than 90 per cent of our watches are made in-house. We're a small atelier and our production is capped at 150 to 200 pieces a year.”

Available exclusively at SHH by Sincere Fine Watches, a Lang & Heyne watch is an exceptional instrument that embodies the highest standard of craftsmanship. Consisting of a small team of watchmakers, each is responsible for one watch from start to finish.

“At Lang & Heyne, we always ask how we can make a watch that is close to perfection. Our finishing is of the highest standard and very detailed; even the sides of our cases are decorated. Clients who know us well have been known to use a magnifying glass to discover all the tiny details of their watches,” Diaz smiles.

Lang & Heyne draws inspiration from traditional Saxonian watchmaking, its watches embodying a sense of heritage and respect for such horological traditions. The design keeps to the principle of essential timekeeping only, resulting in clean, minimalist aesthetics. Its beauty lies in the tiny details from the floral engraving on the balance cock to the artistic Louis XV hand.

Its collections are named after rulers from the House of Wettin, one of the oldest families of German nobility. “It sounds better than calling the watch Reference 123,” quips Diaz, who joined the brand as its CEO in 2020.

Georg and Anton are resolutely modern with rectangular cases, while Friedrich II and III are classic round watches. The limited-to-99 pieces Hektor, is Lang & Heyne's first watch with a steel bracelet—before this, leather straps were the norm. It's distinguished by a repetition of the “petticoat” design motif, from the shape of the aperture that gives a peek at the movement.

For an idea of the manufacture's proficiency since its founding in 2001, it has developed nine in-house movements, all manual-winding. “[The reason that it‘s all manual is so that] it ‘forces’ the wearer to interact with the watch,” says Diaz.

Production is deliberately restricted to ensure every watch is given the attention that it needs. “We're also more flexible when it comes to customisation. We tend to interact directly with our clients, face-timing them constantly and bringing them along on the journey.”

There is immense appreciation for such meticulousness, including the detailed finishing for every single component. “People love it; it makes us special,” says Diaz. We wouldn't argue with that.
