Parmigiani showcases its mechanical and design prowess with the “Tempus Fugit” Dragon clock

In light of the coming Year of the Dragon, Parmigiani has undertaken a restoration project of an old clock from its Metier d'Art collection, the Tempus Fugit inspired by the Chinese dragon and the Pearl of Wisdom.

According to legend, after numerous attempts, a carp manages to make its way to the Dragon Gate and receives the honour of being transformed into a dragon. This is the parable of the student who wants to serve the emperor. The carp here symbolises perseverance, while the pearl represents imperial wisdom.

Parmigiani conveys this priceless notion with this unique piece. Interestingly, the dragon is shaped out of the parts of nine (being an auspicious number for the Chinese) different animals, namely the head of a camel, the ears of a cow, the antlers of a deer, the neck of a snake, the paws of a tiger, the claws of an eagle, the belly of a mollusc, the scales of a carp, and the mane and beard of a lion.

Jade stones in green, white, yellow, orange and red decorate the scales. The claws are solid gold, the eyes red rubies, and the tongue in carnelian. The Pearl of Wisdom is adorned with white diamonds, rubies and sapphires, and surrounded by golden flames. The dragon automaton turns every hour.

The base is cut out of a block of rock crystal, its transparency revealing the movement with an automaton module that operates the hour and the minute. The silver ring circling the base features the traditional Chinese hours (one Chinese hour is two hours).
