Founder of BCHH, Celadon and Milléchron, Benjamin Chee is making significant strides in the luxury watch industry while championing Asian watchmaking

In the world of luxury watches, the Swiss have been the longstanding benchmark for their unparalleled precision, quality and craftsmanship. With such an esteemed history and reputation, it can be difficult for watch brands from other parts of the world to make their mark, especially from countries that are perceived to be newer to the watch industry such as those in Asia. But that has not stopped Singaporean entrepreneur Benjamin Chee from taking up the challenge.

Over the past 12 years, he founded three watch brands and, on top of that, has been proudly flying the flag for Asian watchmaking. While studying law at university in London, Chee developed a passion for history and design, which eventually led to him venturing into the watch business. “Living in London, I was surrounded by some of the best museums and art galleries in the world, and I was up close and personal with all these beautiful objects,” he recalls. “That’s where my passion for design was reinforced and developed further.”

While he had a string of job offers lined up at renowned law firms in Singapore and the UK, Chee realised that he did not have the same passion for law as he did for design. Upon graduation, he spent some time in Shanghai, where he discovered a profound connection to his roots and commitment to promoting Chinese craftsmanship.

As a result, he started his first brand, Celadon, in 2012 with the aim to create high-quality Chinese watches with exceptional design and craftsmanship. “The ethos of Celadon is simple—it is proudly Chinese,” says Chee. “China has this bad reputation for copying people and other countries. I wanted to fight that by showing the very best of Chinese craftsmanship and design. Original design is a core tenet of the brand DNA.”

Celadon has two key lines of watches. The first that Chee started out with is Maison Celadon, which offers more affordable watches, within the price range of US$1,000 to US$5,000, as a way to introduce high-quality yet affordable Chinese watches to people. The second came about in 2020, when he branched out into high horology with Celadon HH, in partnership with Chinese watchmaker Lin Yong Hua, a member of Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants, which aims to perpetuate the art of independent watch and clockmaking.

Lin designs, creates, assembles and finishes all of Celadon HH’s movements, which are paired with intricate cloisonné enamel dials by Chinese enamel artist Xiong Songtao, whose family has been imperial enamellers to the emperors of China for generations.

Chee founded his second watch brand, Milléchron, in 2018, to offer vintage-inspired European designs. It reflects his love for vintage watches but with a modern twist. Vintage watches can be impractical for everyday wear, especially in humid countries like Singapore, he says. “I really love wearing my watches; I don’t want to baby them. So, I created this brand to remix fantasy vintage designs and recreate them in a higher quality with better movements for the modern era.”

And last but certainly not least in Chee’s stable is his flagship brand, Benjamin Chee Haute Horlogerie (BCHH), which he launched in 2019 and stands out as his proudest work so far. With BCHH, Chee sought to create the epitome of luxury and craftsmanship in watchmaking by pushing the envelope in terms of design and innovation.

“We want to create innovative new complications, but still retain that elegant aesthetic,” he says. This can be seen in the BCHH Celestial Voyager, which is a collaboration with Swiss watch manufacture Andersen Genève and featuring a world time complication, as well as the BCHH Celestial Infinity, an astronomical complication clock. Both were nominated for the watch industry’s top awards ceremony, Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The Celestial Infinity also made BCHH the first Singapore brand to be nominated at the GPHG.

Chee is also putting Singapore on the map, quite literally. The Celestial Voyager “Singapore’’ world timer watch features a map of the country rendered in cloisonné enamel on the dial. Like other BCHH watches, it is highly customisable, such as swopping the aventurine city ring for mother-of-pearl, or even depicting historical maps of Singapore before its land reclamation.

Even after 12 years in the business, Chee is only just getting started. “We are just at the takeoff point. I just can’t wait to see what we’ll be able to create and achieve 10 or 20 years from now.”
