Karina, Winter, Giselle and Ningning flaunt the Swiss luxury watchmaker’s latest collection Happy Sport, featuring moving diamonds on the dial of the watch

South Korean girl group Aespa has been signed by Chopard as the Swiss watch and jewellery maker’s latest global brand ambassadors, joining the likes of Julia Roberts, Natalia Vodianova, Sun Li, Lei Jiayin and Zhu Yilong.

Aespa, whose name combines the words avatar, experience and aspect, were selected for their “personal brand of star power and futuristic warrior aesthetics”, according to a press release. Chopard’s co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele said, “It was instantly clear that the abundant talent and joie de vivre exuded by Karina, Winter, Giselle, and Ningning was the ideal fit for Chopard key collections.”

The group made their debut in 2020 with their hit single Black Mamba, which retained the number one spot on QQ Music’s K-pop music video charts for three weeks. Aespa followed up last year with the release of Next Level, their first top five hit song in Korea, and their EP Savage, which peaked at 20 on the US Billboard 200. This year’s second EP Girls topped the charts in South Korea and debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200.

Last year, the group became the first K-pop act to be selected as a whole outfit to be ambassadors of a fashion brand when they were signed by Givenchy, marking the start of brands tapping entire groups to promote their products. The quartet also stepped beyond the ranks of pop music this summer to deliver a speech on sustainability and the metaverse at the United Nations’ High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York in July, where the band was introduced as a “metaverse girl group”.

Vowing to make music while simultaneously supporting sustainability goals, Giselle addressed the delegation: “As the metaverse accelerates, we have to ask the question: ‘Are we working just as hard to create the best possible real-world?”
