Find out how 'blue zones' around the world inspired this eye serum

When it comes to the word 'longevity', what is the first thing you think of? Perhaps a good, healthy diet might come to mind. Using this philosophy, Chanel studied the inhabitants of Greece, Sardinia and Costa Rica—'blue zones', or places where people are known to enjoy long and healthy lives—and observed what they ate and how they lived.

Their discovery culminated in Chanel Blue Serum Eye, an eye serum formulated to target the delicate skin that's prone to signs of ageing and dehydration around the eyes.

Go on a journey with us as we uncover the three special ingredients used in this essential beauty hero.

Costa Rica may have a rugged landscape dotted with rainforests, but it is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Take in the azure blue skies and go surfing along the coastline of Tamarindo or Santa Teresa (P.S. Chanel Beauty ambassador Gisele Bündchen is rumoured to own a villa here).

Without saying, where there's a great surfing culture, there's bound to be awesome coffee as well. A cuppa Costa Rican joe is known for its mild, slightly acidic taste, and surprisingly, it's anti-ageing properties as well.

Collected by hand, sun-dried and extracted using PolyFractioning, Costa Rican green coffee is one of the main ingredients found in Chanel Blue Serum Eye. This anti-oxidant rich ingredient is said to help to energize and de-congest the eye area.

Olive oil has long been known as a healthier alternative to other types of cooking oil because of its monounsaturated fats and anti-inflammatory benefits. This heart-healthy must-have is a staple for many Italian households, and thanks to the fertile soil found on the rolling hills, Sardinia is arguably one of the best places to produce olive oil.

In making their eye serum, Chanel extracted olive oil rich in essential fatty acids and olive leaf highly concentrated with polyphenols from Sardinian olives. When the oils and leaf extract are combined by an oleo-eco-extraction technique,  it helps to bring about a hydrating and skin-protecting effect in the eye serum.

Grecian culture spans back to the early 13th-9th B.C., and as far back as 2,400 years ago, the Greeks have been using lentisk in their everyday lives. The evergreen plant, which is native to the Mediterranean, has been used for cooking, in medicine and for cosmetics and skincare.

Chanel worked with a local cooperative to hand-harvest gum extract from Greek lentisk. The precious resin, which is known to be full of Vitamin E, Omega 6 and Omega 9, and said to have anti-septic properties, undergoes a unique CO2 cold extraction process to preserve as much natural goodness as possible.

Each of the three ingredients: anti-oxidant rich Costa Rican green coffee, moisturising Sardinian olives and healing lentisk gum extract from Greece, were carefully selected to transform the Chanel Blue Serum Eye into a simple but powerful solution for dull, tired-looking eyes. With its anti-puffiness and anti-dark circle complex, it's a universal must-have for any beauty regime.
