The Hublot MP-05 "LaFerrari"

As Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari's official timepiece partner, Hublot has one-upped its predecessors with the introduction of the MP-05 "LaFerrari", inspired by the hybrid supercar of the same name.

This 50-piece limited edition timepice represents a major world first – a 50-day power reserve, made even more impressive by the fact that this is a hand-wound tourbillon wristwatch.

The ultra-refined and technical-looking LaFerrari has an entirely original movement – an engine, if you will – with a jaw-dropping 637 parts, and measures 45.8mm x 39.5mm x 14.5mm. The centre column comprises 11 barrels (some 25 metres of barrel spring in all), which discharge simultaneously and not in turn. No simple prancing-horse-logo-on-watch-dial cop-out here. 

The LaFerrari's case is manufactured by ProFusion, a specialist in cases, dials and gemsetting now owned by Hublot. Its power reserve, meanwhile, is indicated in days on two stacked cylindrical displays on the left, hour and minutes on the right, and seconds tick off on a rotating ring affixed to the vertical tourbillon display front and centre.

Embodying the LaFerrari car's sleek lines, the watch case, topped with a curved sapphire and also boasting an open caseback, is hewn from titanium and given a black PVD treatment. Red anodized aluminium reinforcement bars on the movement are further Ferrari nuances. A touch of carbon fibre is mandatory, framed in titanium at the top of the case, where the winding crown is located.

Because having to manually wind the LaFerrari every 50 days might literally wear your fingers to the bone, Hublot has been very considerate in providing owners with a mini power drill-like tool, inspired by the quick tyre-change wheel guns used in Formula 1.
