Rejuran Healer is the latest skin-healing technology on the market

By now, hyaluronic acid injectible skin boosters have become common knowledge, serving to hydrate, brighten, and plump up the skin for as long as the substance remains. But while these skin boostes are an excellent quick fix, what they cannot do is repair fine lines, pigmentation, acne scars, or signs of ageing. But what if there was a treatment that could? That's where Rejuran Healer comes in. Rejuran Healer, colloquially known as baby skin injections, or 婴儿针, is a treatment that actually heals the skin itself, repairing any acne- or age-induced damage along the way. In a way, it's a treatment that can help turn back time. We consulted with Dr. Lam Bee Lan, the director at Ageless Medical Centre and Ageless Medical Aesthetics Centre, to find out more about this supposed miracle treatment.

According to information from Dr. Lam, Rejuran Healer is a type of injectible that contains polynucleotides (PN) (or polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), a subset of PN), which has prodigious wound-healing capabilities. It functions by improving the skin's own regenerating capabilities. It does so by stimulating the growth of fibroblasts, a type of cell that actually generates collagen and other cells within the skin's extracellular matrix. More fibroblasts means more collagen and more newly-generated cells that replace old, damaged ones—and that means skin that is smoother and more elastic. Unwanted pigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles are reduced, pores are minimised, and the skin becomes firmer and less saggy. Best of all, because Rejuran acts as a healing agent, even conditions such as eczema, acne-induced inflammation and old deep-set acne scars can be healed and eliminated. And naturally, Rejuran can also be used as a sort of youth preservation tool, to prevent futher skin damage as we age. As ridiculous as it sounds, this may be the closest that we have gotten to the fountain of youth so far.

So what is the catch? For one thing, Rejuran is derived from salmon sperm (yes, you read that correctly, although some will sugar-coat is by calling it salmon DNA), so people who are allergic to salmon should not try it. Those who have undergone treatments involving collagen stimulators or biostimulators such as Ellansé and Sculptra should likewise not undergo Rejuran. Otherwise its contraindications are similar to those of other injectables; those who are on blood thinners such as warfarin should take caution as they are prone to bleeding and bruising.

For another thing, Rejuran does cause a rather peculiar post-treatment appearance. Because it is injected into the skin in dots, there will be small raised weals at the site of each injection that take about 24 hours to fully disperse (this may go up to 48 hours for the eye area). This is in addition to the needle marks that may persist for a few days after, although these are easily solved with the use of makeup. While the down time is short, the initial appearance of the weals (which look like rows and rows of mosquito bites) may be slightly alarming at first. And of course, as Rejuran is an injectible, there is a certain level of pain tolerance required.

Despite the drawbacks, Rejuran is quickly becoming a sought-after treatment, because it is just that good. A full course of the Rejuran involves three initial monthly treatments, followed by one every six months as a top-up. Results can be seen approximately four weeks after the first treatment, as the skin requires time to heal and regenerate.

On a more personal note, I did try the full three treatments of Rejuran for myself, to see whether or not it really is the miracle cure it seems to be. I most definitely saw a alrge reduction in the severity of the fine lines around my eye area, which have long been a concern, and my skin felt much smoother to the touch. The neck lines I have had for years were also smoother and noticeably reduced. I did not experience a reduction in pigmentation (although I admittedly do not have much), but other patients I met have said that they saw their sun spots diminish greatly after the treatment. Most impressive, however, was the effects of Rejuran on the eczema patches that I was experiencing on my neck and eye area. The neck patches, which had persisted for a good two to three months, disappeared within a week of the first treatment, and the small patch on my eye area disappeared after the second, never to return. Plus, Dr. Lam's skill with the needle meant that there was virtually zero bruising after the treatments, and I only had to contend with the raised weals. Dr. Lam also ensured that the weals and needle marks healed more quickly by adding a LED facial treatment after the injections. Overall, under her expertise, Rejuran gets my stamp of approval.
