What does Cornerstone Wines managing director Clinton Ang have on his holiday wish list? Here's his selection of the finest timepieces to gift that special someone

1/10 Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface

It’s hard to resist the elegant charm and Art Déco aesthetic of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s iconic Reverso. Created in the 1930s, the watch was ahead of its time and has remained practically unchanged in appearance through the decades, as reflected in the Reverso Tribute Duoface.

Encased within a polished stainless steel case, the front dial is sunray-brushed, reflecting a different shade of blue under different intensities and angles of light. It is decorated with appliquéd hour markers and fitted with dauphine hands, as well as a small seconds sub-dial. Flip it over and you have your silvered-grey back dial with velvety Clous de Paris guilloché, and appliquéd hour-markers displaying a second time zone, and a smaller subdial serving as a 24-hour, day/night indication. Perfect for the jet-setter.

Available at Cortina Watch, 01-36, Raffles City.

2/10 Corum Admiral 42 Bronze

Released in 1960, the Admiral collection is a flagship line of Swiss watchmaker Corum and an embodiment of its maritime watchmaking heritage. The contemporary and sporty collection is most identifiable by its iconic dodecagonal bezel and the use of 12 nautical pennants as hour markers.

The Admiral 42 Bronze is the latest addition to the family, reflecting a more modern take on the Admiral 42 with its unique bronze case, in tribute to the brass material that was used in old ships. Designed to withstand the test of time, a special bronze alloy is chosen for the case and bezel and a unique satin-brushed finishing is applied on the entire case so that it evolves with age to obtain a vintage patina while remaining homogeneous over time.

This watch is perfect for travelling, given how hardy and versatile it is. It will also be fun to wear this to business dinners hosted by my in-laws, since they are in the shipping business.

3/10 Montblanc Heritage Automatic

Form meets function with the Montblanc Heritage collection, recalling the Minerva classic wristwatches of the 1940s and 1950s. This particular automatic dress watch reflects the golden age of watchmaking, featuring a lacquered British racing green-coloured dial with “grainé” hour ring and sunray finishes; yellow gold-coated Arabic numerals and dots, luminescent bent dauphine hour-and minute-hands, bent baton second-hand; and the historical Montblanc logo at 12 o’clock.

It comes with a 40mm yellow gold case and a British racing green-coloured Sfumato alligator-skin strap—perfect for the neo-dandy gentlemen.

Available at Montblanc, 01-28 to 29, Raffles City.

4/10 Cartier Pasha de Cartier

From GMTs to chronographs, and even sturdy perpetual calendars, the Pasha series is not a stranger in keeping up with the evolution and iteration of movements. The new Pasha series is no different, taking most of its inspiration from the 1943 Pasha series.

The traditional four Arabic numerals on the silvered flinqué dial and diamond-shaped hands made of blue-steel all sit comfortably and slightly low in the slim case, protected by the screw-down crown housing a blue spinel or sapphire. Backed with paramagnetic alloy and nickel-phosphorus, the Calibre 1847 MC anti-magnetic movement can be spotted in the new Pasha collection via the sapphire crystal caseback. Unlike the traditional lug-width strap standards, the Pasha de Cartier watch has its Vendome-styled bars coupled with innovative QuickSwitch strap system, allowing the change from an alligator-skin strap to a link bracelet according to the occasion. Available in 35mm and 41mm.

Available at Cortina Watch, 01-36, Raffles City.

5/10 Chopard Alpine Eagle XL Chrono

Chopard’s modern interpretation of its first and now-discontinued luxury sports watch St Moritz, the Alpine Eagle retains the integrated bracelet and eight-screw design on the bezel, with a more refined and contemporary look—a tonneau-shaped central case; textured sunburst dial (inspired by the iris of an eagle); feather-shaped counterweight on the second hand; date window between 4 and 5 o’clock; the crown engraved with a compass rose; and the use of their specially developed lucent steel.

Now, the collection has expanded with the introduction of a flyback chronograph that is certified a chronometer by Cosc, in a 44mm diameter case crafted in Lucent Steel A223, and available with a new pitch-black dial, as well as Aletsch blue.

Black and grey have always been my colours of choice. It's a durable watch which is comfortable to wear, and its parts are embedded in a convenient yet unobtrusive manner.

6/10 Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Mariner Date

Paying homage to its diving watch legacy, Jaeger-LeCoultre has introduced two new high-performance timepieces to its sporty Polaris collection, one of which is the Polaris Mariner Date. Housed within a 42mm case that is resistant to 300 metres, the watch features a rich gradient-blue dial with three concentric circles in contrasting textures, as well as bold trapezoid-shaped indexes and three Arabic numerals—iconic aesthetic features of the Polaris. For legibility in low light and safety, hands, indexes and numerals are treated with luminescent SuperLumiNova pigments, as well as different colours for easy distinguishing of the hour and minute hands.

On top of classic diving-watch functions, the Polaris Mariner Date features an addition of an instantly-jumping date display, with dual crowns to operate the inner bezel and for setting the time and date. It runs on the Calibre 899 with a power reserve of 70 hours.

Available at Cortina Watch, 01-36, Raffles City.

7/10 Montblanc 1858 Monopusher Chronograph

Taking inspiration from professional Minerva watches from the 1920s and 1930s, the Montblanc 1858 Monopusher Chronograph evokes a vintage aesthetic with its black and beige two-tone dial and cognac-coloured aged calf leather strap.

Featuring a 42mm full satin-finished stainless steel case, the chronograph is powered by Montblanc’s automatic MB 25.12 Monopusher Chronograph calibre, which indicates elapsed time with a 30-minute counter and a central seconds hand at the three o’clock and nine o’clock positions on the dial, respectively. Expressing the spirit of exploration that is consistent through the 1858 collection, there is also a telemeter scale that will come in handy on excursions and expeditions.

Available at Montblanc, 01-28 to 29, Raffles City.

8/10 Montblanc 1858 Geosphere Messner Limited Edition

Reinterpreted from the professional Minerva watches from the 1920s and 1930s—which were conceived for military use and exploration—Montblanc’s 1858 line embodies the spirit of mountain exploration. The 1858 Geosphere Messner Limited Edition, in particular, is dedicated to the legendary climber and explorer Reinhold Messner.

The watch’s vintage colour palette recalls mountaineering exploration tools from the past, while the case-back features an image of the Mont Blanc mountain; the complete Messner’s list; a compass; two crossed ice pick-axes; and, for the limited edition, an engraving of Messner’s signature. The theme of exploration is amplified on the dial, which features a world time complication with two turning domed globes representing the northern and southern hemispheres, each with 24 time zones scales as well as day and night indications. The watch is limited to 262 pieces.

I like its striking design and sharp colours, and how it embodies the grit and spirit of Reinhold Messner.

9/10 Montblanc Star Legacy Chronograph Day & Date

Inspired by 19th and 20th Century Minerva pocket watches, the Montblanc Star Legacy Chronograph Day & Date features rhodium-coated roman numerals, silvery-black dial and flange, and that iconic Montblanc exploding star guilloché pattern just above the day-date window. This particular Star Legacy comes with a chronograph complication (subdials are elapsed seconds, 30-min counter, and 12-hour counter), along with a Day & Date at three o’clock, combining a timeless design with a modern, practical movement.

The domed sapphire crystal lets the details on the entire dial pop in its 43mm stainless steel polished and satin-finished case, making it read a little larger. The sapphire crystal on the case back allows you to view the mechanical marvel of calibre MB 25.07.

Available at Montblanc, 01-28 to 29, Raffles City.

The Montblanc Star Legacy product line takes its inspiration from Minerva’s heritage and the company’s pocket watches, made during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Montblanc Star Legacy Moonphase features a refined moonphase complication, appreciated by watch aficionados for its utility, technical prowess and beauty. Displayed in an aperture at 6 o’clock, the moonphase combined with the date brings elegant and refined proportions to the dial. Respecting the Montblanc Star Legacy design cod

10/10 Montblanc Star Legacy Moonphase

Combining utility, technical prowess and beauty, the Montblanc Star Legacy Moonphase draws its inspiration from Minerva timepieces from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, seen particularly through the redesigned Arabic numerals.

The Moonphase, along with a hand-type date indication, sits in an aperture at six o’clock, against the exploding Montblanc star guilloché pattern on a silvery-white dial. Leaf-shaped hands, an onion-shaped crown, railway minute track, and filet sauté (up-and-down guilloché lines) complete the elegant and refined timepiece, housed in a 42mm round stainless steel case, which features refined curved horns with facets. It is paired with a midnight blue leather strap.

Available at Montblanc, 01-28 to 29, Raffles City.
