Susanna Kang’s spontaneous, inimitable approach to fashion translates into her often unexpected looks, with stunning hairdos to match

While being "unpredictable" usually evokes negative connotations, it is only ever a good thing for Singapore's perennial style maven Susanna Kang. Her "unpredictability" is reflected in her one-of-a-kind ensembles and flamboyant style choices, such as her punk rock getup for Wild Rice’s 2012 charity gala and the Chanel Cruise 2013/2014 Show in Singapore.

One might think that Susanna painstakingly plans her outfits way in advance, but the vivacious mother-of-one says, "I don’t believe in going to great lengths to acquire something as that can be stressful. After all, fashion should be enjoyed!" Helping Susanna look picture perfect for galas and soirees are her trusted hair stylist and make-up artist – "I discuss my ideas with them and we 'work the magic' together like a dream team."

Speaking of ideas, Susanna finds inspiration from travelling, movies and everyday life. She cited her Pocahontas ensemble at the recent Singapore Repertory Theatre ball – all it took was a Red Indian headpiece from Australia, a Prada dress and Hermès cape for her to be party-ready. "I often have fleeting ideas of what I’d like to wear and they can be spontaneous, but that makes dressing up fun!"

Enthusing that less is more, and sometimes more is never enough when accessorising, Susanna counts on classic pieces from French jewellery maisons Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Chaumet for that extra sparkle.

One of Kang’s favourite jewellery selections is Chaumet’s Liens collection.

The style dynamo is also currently smitten with Givenchy’s version of ethnic prints – "I like their interpretation best", as well as Prada’s spring/summer offerings, which she describes as “art in fashion”.

On her wish list though, is a comeback for British fashion designer John Galliano. The Singapore Tatler Fashion Hall of Fame 2010 inductee says, "I think he’s brilliant. If I could, I'd definitely be in talks with him to create a style tsunami for the world."
