Former Balenciaga creative director Nicolas Ghesquière has taken on the role of artistic director at esteemed Parisian luxury house Louis Vuitton, one month after Marc Jacobs announced his departure.
Rumour has long had it that the 42-year-old Frenchman, credited with rebuilding the Balenciaga brand as a major luxury player, would be announced as the new head designer at Louis Vuitton.
"Louis Vuitton has always incarnated for me the symbol of ultimate luxury, innovation and exploration," said Ghesquière. "I am very honoured of the mission that I am entrusted with, and proud to join the history of this great Maison. Together we will build the future of the brand while preserving its precious heritage."
Ghesquière is currently in a protracted legal battle with his former employer, which he left in 2012 (to be replaced by American Alexander Wang) after 15 years at the helm. Jacobs left Vuitton last month in order to focus on his own Marc Jacobs brand alongside business partner Robert Duffy and LVMH (a major stakeholder).
Ghesquière will be presenting his first collection for Louis Vuitton in Paris in March 2014.
