Beauty Talk: Natalia Vodianova On Her Makeup Philosophy And Being The Face Of Guerlain
You created a special holiday collection for Guerlain in 2018. What was your inspiration?
Natalia Vodianova (NV) I was so inspired by my trip to India, where we shot The Legend of Shalimar commercial in 2013. The collection features all the beautiful colours of India that is embodied in the Shalimar scent. Blue, gold and sapphire gemstones are everywhere in India. I said to Laurent Boillot [Guerlain president and CEO], “Why don’t we transform this into a beauty collection and not just perfume?” That’s how the collection came about. It means so much to me especially since the profits from the sale go to the Naked Heart Foundation, which I founded in 2004 to help children with special needs.
What has been the craziest thing you have done with the brand?
NV Definitely the production of the Shalimar commercial with film-maker Bruno Aveillan. We shot it in just three days, when it was supposed to be done over 10. That was quite crazy; we worked very long hours but it was my decision because I had to go back to Paris. I had an event with a group of autistic children visiting Disneyland that was organised in advance.
How far have you travelled with Guerlain?
NV Across Jaipur in India, behind the walls of La Muralla Roja in Spain, and around China.
What are your favourite Guerlain products?
NV I’m a huge fan of the Terracotta bronzing powder and highlighter. I also love the Météorites (pictured above) because it gives the skin a beautiful glow. It’s my latest makeup essential.
What is your makeup philosophy?
NV You must treat your face like a sculpture, where you conceal certain features and highlight others.

Best beauty tip?
NV Never put lipstick exactly on the contour of my lips. I always apply it with my finger; it is more like a work of impressionism than a controlled movement. It makes the lips look lusher and more beautiful. For the perfect lip, I draw my cupid’s bow with a lip liner to open the lips a little more.
