For spring/summer 2022, Jonathan Anderson continued his tried-and-true pandemic presentation format, showcasing Loewe’s menswear collection through a series of coffee table books

Jonathan Anderson brought two creative minds—German painter Florian Krewer and British fashion photographer David Sims—together for a “dialogue” on Loewe’s hard-partying, action-packed spring/summer 2022 men’s collection. Here are five things that Tatler loved about the (still) surprising show in a box.

Keeping true to his pandemic-era presentation format, Jonathan Anderson once again presented the spring/summer 2022 men’s collection via a box, albeit one filled with party-worthy surprises. There were two books—one dedicated to German artist Florian Krewer, and another, a lookbook photographed by renowned lensman Davis Sims.

Other surprises included glow-in-the-dark stars and a neon yellow slap bracelet—both nods to early club culture that Anderson referenced for the men’s SS22 collection.

Krewer’s impressionistic paintings of the male form and urban landscapes served as Anderson’s inspiration for the new season. In particular, Krewer’s vibrant use of colour was echoed in the colour palette of Loewe’s men’s SS22 collection. Explaining his choice, Anderson said, “When I follow him on Instagram, where I follow his work, he shows me a world that is new and progressive. He is an artist that I have found incredibly inspiring and I think he’s one of the most talented painters of his generation.”

David Sims’ quirky, photographic collages were a stunning counterpoint

The other figure in the picture at Loewe was renowned photographer David Sims, who lensed the accompanying lookbook for the collection. Applying his unique vision to the rave-inspired men’s SS22 collection, Sims captured the models in various states of partying and languidity—a feeling that Anderson was trying to evoke with the collection. Sims’ images also served as a brilliant counterpoint to Krewer’s paintings. “I’ve always loved the way in which he encapsulates the male form, and how he shows vulnerability, and the way in which he uses the artform of photography and progresses it,” Anderson said. “The images are very worked up, they are very painterly. And I thought there was a really nice dialogue between Florian and David.”

Classic bags were given a remake

Of course, if you’re a Loewe fan, you would know the house’s signature Puzzle bag. This season, Anderson has evolved the house classic, introducing it in a slouchier, cooler hobo bag shape, as well as a chic crossbody version painted in neon bright colours like pink and orange. “I wanted it to feel like it was a bag to go out with,” Anderson said.

The accompanying “music video” was a tribute to optimism

Drawing on early party culture and raves Anderson experienced in his youth in Ibiza, Loewe’s accompanying video for the men’s SS22 collection was an energetic, positive ode to movement and getting out there. “This season is more about the action; the action of going out, the action of having fun,” Anderson said. “And I wanted it to feel that it was something fluid and something where we were not getting locked into a universal kind of gender boundary.”
