The makeup maestro shares his tips and tricks for a refreshing daytime look and a sultry nighttime look using Kanebo's latest makeup collection

With all these time spent at home in 2020 thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, some of us have been honing their skills to perfect that winged liner or contour, while many others (like me) have settled for makeup-free days or—if we absolutely have to—a minimal look that consists of a BB cream and lip tint.

Regardless of your preference, however, the holiday season calls for a shake-up to your beauty routine. And who better to seek advice from than veteran makeup artist Clarence Lee? In collaboration with leading Japanese beauty brand Kanebo, the makeup maestro has designed a day look and a night look featuring Kanebo’s latest collection, curated into two comprehensive hampers.

FOR THE DAY

Using: The Primer, The Foundation, Smooth Feathery Powder, Eye Colour Duo 03, Eye Colour Duo 13, Eye Colour Duo 14, Drawing Crayon 02, Drawing Dual Rouge 51, Powder Eyebrow 01 - Greyish Brown, Deep Gel Eyeliner 02 - Tender Brown, Volume Framing Mascara 01 - Deep Black, N-Rouge 116, and Moisture Rouge Neo 155 from Kanebo.

The focus for this refreshing and vibrant daytime look is on the eyes, where Clarence has opted for a pop of green (from Eye Colour Duo 03) in the middle of the lid.

“Most people usually just go for nude or neutral shades, and it’s kind of boring—so I thought this pop of green would add some highlight to the eyes without being very stark,” he explains.

The cheek colour is kept soft and natural so as to not draw the attention away from the eyes, with a subtle highlight using the Drawing Crayon 02 - Milky Pearl.

As for the lips, Moisture Rouge Neo in 155 Natural Beige blends perfectly, evoking a sense of warmth to the lips, while the N-Rouge in 116 Comic Orange adds a touch of vibrance in the middle of the lips, like a bloom.

If you are not very comfortable with a strong bold shade on your eyes, go with neutral tones and just add a pop of bright green, yellow, or even blue. You can dot it somewhere in the middle of the eyelids, in the inner corner, or the lower eye line and it will make your eye makeup so much more interesting.

FOR THE EVENING

Using: The Primer, The Foundation, Smooth Feathery Powder, Eye Colour Duo 05, Eye Colour Duo 10, Eye Colour Duo 15, Drawing Dual Rouge 52, Pencil Eyebrow 02 - Neutral Brown, Deep Gel Eyeliner 01 - Sharp Black, Volume Framing Mascara 01 - Deep Black, Moisture Rouge Neo 111 and Moisture Rouge Neo 114 from Kanebo.

As the sun sets, switch up your makeup for a sultry look.

“I extended her eyes at the back with winged eyeliner using the Deep Gel Eyeliner in 01 Sharp Black, and a little bit in front with the Eye Colour Duo in 15 Midnight Parade with a slight shimmer. There is a transition from the bronzey gold at the start of the eye, to a dusky, purple shade (Eye Colour Duo in 10 Cosmo Bijoux) in the middle, and finally to dark brown on the outer corners, a colour palette that evokes the night,” Clarence shares.

To further accentuate the eyes, the makeup artist used the same purple shade on the lower lash line and a lighter, pale purple on the lower inner corner of the eyes as a highlight.

“In contrast to the day look, where the cheek colour was applied near the apples of the cheek, I applied the colour towards the side of the cheekbone, from the temple down, for this look so that it looks more sophisticated.”

Using the Moisture Rouge Neo in 114 Mystical Orchid, the lipstick is applied directly on the lips, accentuating the natural lip colour with a touch of shimmer.

For a brighter lip colour to accompany this look, you can also use the Moisture Rouge Neo in 111 Eden Pink, which is a subdued pink.
