As one of Wimbledon’s most stylish guests, we take a look at the Duchess of Cambridge’s best court-side outfits over the years

For the British high society, few events are as eagerly anticipated as Wimbledon. While sports may be the focus of the annual tennis tournament, style is served up, too. Kate Middleton knows this well. Since 2011, the Duchess of Cambridge has attended the event in ensembles befitting a royal, often attracting as much attention for her sophisticated outfits as the athletic prowess of the tennis stars on the court.

With Wimbledon 2022 now in full swing, we take a look back at some of Kate Middleton’s best court-side fashion moments.

Just two months after her fairytale wedding with Prince William in 2011, Kate Middleton made her first Wimbledon appearance as the Duchess of Cambridge. The newly-wed matched the famous all-white dress code that’s applied to tennis players at Wimbledon, wearing a tiered Temperley London dress with pleats, ruffles and a nipped waist—her style signature. The white of her dress also made her 12-carat sapphire engagement ring stand out even more.

Together with Prince William, Kate attended the 2012 Wimbledon to catch Roger Federer’s tennis match against Mikhail Youzhny. She picked her favourite fashion brand and wedding gown designer to dress her for the occasion: Alexander McQueen. Her preppy sailor dress featured a front tie and navy stripes along the cuffs, collar and hem that matched the blue of her wedding ring and her husband’s suit. It’s worth noting that Kate had worn the same dress a year before, and that she was rather bravely repeating outfits long before celebrities would do so on the red carpet in the name of sustainability.

She sported another all-white (or, to be exact, cream) look the next day when she watched the match between Roger Federer and Andy Murray. Complementing her sister Pippa’s smart casual attire—a peplum dress—Kate wore a dress and matching cropped jacket from British label Joseph. She injected some fun into the look with a leopard-print clutch from Diane von Furstenberg.

Kate’s look for the 2014 Wimbledon played heavily with textures. She arrived in a breezy, broderie anglaise frock by Zimmerman, and added a pop of colour to her look with a red scarf and an Anya Hindmarch fan-shaped clutch in woven straw. Her pearl drop earrings completed the elegant ensemble.

In 2016, Kate showed her support for Andy Murray in another Alexander McQueen dress. Crafted from ivory silk, the dress was adorned with the brand’s colourful Obsession print featuring crystals, birds, butterflies and even skulls. It was certainly an interesting choice for the royal, who pulled off the busy print with minimal accessories.

Kate continued to have fun with prints in 2018, when she watched the Ladies Wimbledon Final with her sister-in-law Meghan Markle. Her Jenny Packham dress was covered in black polka dots, which made its ruching details along the shoulder and hip even more pronounced.

She followed up that playful outfit with a burst of colour via a bright yellow Dolce & Gabbana dress, which brought out the warm tones of her brown hair. She certainly knows her colours.

Speaking of knowing her colours, Kate graced the 2019 Women’s Finals in a deep green dress with gold-tone buttons, again by Dolce & Gabbana. Like her yellow frock, this verdant look featured short, puffed sleeves, and had a fitted bodice that emphasised the Duchess’s svelte figure.

She would later present the winner’s trophy in a baby blue Emilia Wickstead dress cut in her favourite fit-and-flare style. Unlike the knee-grazing hemlines of her earlier Wimbledon looks, Kate’s dress fell way past her knees with a midi-length skirt that she clearly favours (and that was popularised by one of her favourite fashion brands, The Vampire’s Wife). She completed the classy outfit with a pair of nude pumps.

Kate would revisit the flattering silhouette of her Emilia Wickstead dress in 2021, when she stepped out in a blush pink belted midi dress by Beulah London. She also rewore the suede heels from her Wimbledon look two years before, but even more notably adds a dose of sparkle to her outfit with a glittering face mask.
