From Seoul to Hong Kong, here is Tatler's guide to tripping for fashion

With borders reopened across Asia, shopping trips are back on the cards. We asked a group of fashionistas to share their insiders tips on the most exciting fashion cities.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s post-pandemic luxury scene is picking up and proudly celebrating a fusion of authentic Chinese culture with globally trending fashion.

“K11 Musea is one of the city’s newest shopping malls; it incorporates some of the most influential contemporary brands with luxury brands. What makes it better is they have a good variety of unique restaurants suitable for any cravings we may have. [My other favourite] spot would be Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun for vintage goods—every time I go there feels like a scavenger hunt with lots of unexpected finds.”

“Hong Kong always has a special place in my heart, thanks to its variety of shops, galleries and interesting mix of fashion. My favourite shopping spots are Lane Crawford, Joyce and Mong Kok’s Sneaker Street. The city’s vibe is unlike anywhere else in the world—and the food is always amazing.”

Tokyo

While Ginza continues to be the haven for luxury brands, make sure to stop by Shibuya for new shopping complexes, subcultural stores and second-hand treasures; and Shimokitazawa, a new trendy neighbourhood.

“The Four-Eyed is the best place to find international and domestic young talents. For luxury, Restir: it has a strong line-up of international designers but also stocks domestic designers. For some Japanese elements, Tsukikageya is very authentic but fun. It started out selling yukatas [casual cotton kimonos], and now has kimonos and some streetwear too. Some of the prints are based on traditional patterns; many are witty modernisations.”

“It is such an exciting place that is so different from anywhere else with its own style and modern aesthetic yet with so many ancient traditions, which is such a fascinating contrast.”

“I love travelling to Tokyo as it has some great vintage shops but is also a hub for really unique industry-first products—from innovative technology to beauty products.”

Bangkok

With its irresistible mix of authentic outdoor markets and larger-than-life shopping malls, it’s no wonder the Thai capital is top of many people’s travel lists.

“I always love going to Thailand for holiday and shopping: for its flea markets and emerging creative talents. It’s surprisingly fun for vintage shopping and I always manage to find something inspiring in markets like Chatuchak.”

Yu Masui
“I am fascinated by upcycling at the moment. Bangkok is a vintage heaven [which makes sourcing materials easy]. You can find very reasonable and fun pieces in JJ [Chatuchak] weekend market. [At the other end of the spectrum], there are quality designers like Dry Clean Only that [repurpose high-end] vintage goods, especially tees, with tailoring and couture-like techniques.”

Seoul

Asia’s hottest fashion city offers more than K-pop. Seoul is a hub for tech-savvy boutiques, luxury department stores and It-girls’ favourite independent designers

Jenny Tsang
“I look forward to visiting Korea as I love the aesthetic of brands there. It’s very much what I would wear: Reike Nen, Low Classic and Minjukim, just to name a few.”

Tiffany Hsu
“[One of] my personal favourites is Boon The Shop in Seoul. In terms of shopping areas, Gangnam is just fantastic. There are so many great stores there, not only the mega brands; you can also find amazing and unique small brands and concept stores.”
