These top celebrities with Asian heritage didn’t come to play, they came to slay

Asian excellence is what we like to see, and there was no shortage of it on the Met Gala 2021 red carpet.

Met Gala veterans like Gemma Chan, Eva Chen and Mindy Kaling killed it as always, but it was the crop of first timers that really made an impact this year.

Athletes Sunisa Lee and Emma Raducanu (fresh off her US Open win), made their appearance in gorgeous ensembles: Lee in a metallic gold two-piece outfit that was fit for a champion, while Raducanu kept things classic in monochrome Chanel.

Speaking of monochrome, Marvel’s Shang Chi star Simu Liu also made his Met Gala debut, showing off his superhero physique in Fendi; and Blackpink’s Rosé Park flaunted her enviably lithe legs in a black-and-white minidress designed by Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello.

K-pop queen CL (Lee Chaerin) paid tribute to Americana in a denim outfit by Alexander Wang, but also to her Korean heritage by incorporating the otgoreum, the ribbon knot used to fasten the traditional Korean hanbok.

Four-time Grand Slam singles champion Naomi Osaka mades waves on the red carpet with her gravity-defying beauty look and makeup that paid tribute to Japanese Kabuki makeup, but it was her custom Louis Vuitton outfit that incorporated Koi fish designs to honour her Japanese hometown.

Korean American filmmaker and activist Eugene Lee Yang turned heads on the Met Gala red carpet with his look that took the night’s black tie dress code seriously, but then turned it on its head with blood red, skyscraper heels.
