In honour of Mean Girls Day on October 3, we revisit trends from the teen comedy hit that are so fetch right now

We maintain that Mean Girls is the best teen flick of them all. With its funny writing, real problems regarding identity and friendship, memorable quotes and fabulous fashion moments, this film has all the major components needed to make it iconic.

Despite having been released in 2004, costume designer Mary Jane Fort chose outfits that were both representative of the time and had longevity. Y2K fashion has had a major comeback this year, and there are so many trends then that are still wearable today, so let’s assess the looks.

Cut-out details

Regina George (played by Rachel McAdams) made cut-out tops a thing way before Nensi Dojaka brought this trend to the limelight. Even though Janis Ian (played by Lizzy Caplan) attempted to sabotage her by cutting holes in the chest of George’s tank top, the leader of The Plastics shrugged it off and wore the look with confidence, thus setting a new trend for the rest of the female student body to follow suit.

Prada’s autumn/winter 2021 collection was spot-on with perfectly circular cut-outs on all long-sleeved turtleneck tops. Colourful layers underneath sneakily peeked through.

Both Sid Neigum and LaQuan Smith have played around with exposing unconventional parts of the body, such as the torso or hips.

Mini monogrammed handbags

George also spearheaded the need for the petite purse with her many designer bags in the film. The most iconic of them all was her Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami bag—from its powdery pink hue to the cherry blossom print, this bag was everything. She also sported a Gucci pouchette from time to time.

The revival of the Fendi Baguette in 2019 launched a thousand bags that fit snug under the arm, and the trend is still going strong. Bulgarian brand By Far set the tone, and by far had the most desirable tiny handbag (the Rachel) which came in all shades.

Influencer Devon Lee Carlson collaborated with Marc Jacobs this year to create a cute pink handbag with a chain that could double as a charm necklace. Tatler predicts that George would’ve totally worn this must-have accessory.

Argyle sweaters

Gretchen Wieners (played by Lacey Chabert) often sported argyle sweater vests in different shades, and this gave her a bit of individuality in the clique, despite her strong desire to mimic the queen to fit in. This print made a comeback last year and was styled with pleated miniskirts, much like how the “Heiress of Toaster Strudel” wore the trend.

Argyle is a staple of labels like Pringle of Scotland, who notably revive the print every season in various colours and styles, but other brands like Lacoste have also jumped on the heritage bandwagon to deliver preppy knitwear pieces. Dua Lipa has been spotted in wearing a Burberry jumper, which is a playful iteration of the print in an oversized fit.

Hairclips

Large hairclips are everywhere right now, and George had a go at them too, although she was at a low point in her life when Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan) and Ian successfully cut her off from the resources that made her so popular.

Regardless, George looked 100 per cent Y2K with her hair clipped up wearing bootcut jeans. This casual hairstyle is in full force today with Bella Hadid at the helm of the look. Spanish accessories brand La Manso recently released an oh-so-cute dolphin clip in summery colours.

Miniskirts

Miniskirts were all the rage in the early aughts, and over a decade later they’re back again.  They were the unofficial uniform of The Plastics, as jeans and sweatpants were not allowed, so the quartet wore them almost daily in a variety of colours and patterns. Karen Smith (played by Amanda Seyfried) had our favourite selection.

Courrèges and Miu Miu toed the line of super short skirts in their spring/summer and autumn/winter 2021 collections respectively, inspired by the microminis of the 1960s. The silhouette is less fussy and frilly—like the one worn by Heron when she fell in the rubbish bin—but more streamlined and straight with plenty of fun fabrics.

Our favourite look

If we had to pick one best look from the film that no-one talks about, it must be the snooty sales assistant who totally shades George by suggesting she try Sears since she can’t fit into to her dream prom dress. Body shaming aside, the assistant’s head-to-toe black look screams chic—from the sleeveless top paired with the sleek skirt and the Fendi belt. You go, Glen Coco.
