Plus, keep up with all the best looks from the menswear spring/summer 2022 shows: Moschino, Tod’s, Dior Men’s, Paul Smith, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Prada, Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana, Ermenegildo Zegna, Brunello Cuccinelli and more

The menswear spring/summer 2022 shows are in full swing, with most brands opting for digital presentations over physical shows. While we’re not able to travel to the shows this season (yet again), designers seem bent on bringing exotic locations to us: so far, we’ve been to the beach with Prada, enjoyed a light show with Dolce & Gabbana, supped on water with Ermenegildo Zegna, and explored the majesty of the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana with Fendi. Not bad for another digital season. As the season rolls on, check back here as we track the best looks from the menswear spring/summer 2022 season.

Who: Moschino

The Inspiration: Old Hollywood musicals, Universal Studios, ’50s fashion, fast food

The Quote: “I wanted to take the excitement, the glamour, and the whimsy of all the old Hollywood musicals and use them as a vehicle to show this collection,” said creative director Jeremy Scott. “This season, it’s all about song and dance! And few things make me happier than when style and cinema collide.”

Who: Tod’s

The Inspiration: The adventurous imagery of Peter Beard coupled with the idea of the urban safari, imagining a wardrobe focused on leisure.

The Quote: “I was thinking about the idea of exploring. Not only the faraway places that you’ve never visited. But also exploring anew places that you’ve always known and that you haven’t been able to go to because of the travel restrictions we’ve endured. You see familiar places with new eyes, as if they were new discoveries,” said designer Walter Chiapponi in an interview.

Who: Dior Men’s and Travis Scott

The Inspiration: Christian Dior’s close ties with Texas, and a collaboration with Texan-born rapper Travis Scott—the first full collaboration with a musician in the house’s history.

The Quote: “The pink is the sky over Houston, the green is the cactus, the brown is the soil...We added the white and black, which are classic Dior, so bringing the two together,” Kim Jones explained about bringing Texas and Paris together through Scott’s unique lens in an interview. He added, “We wanted it to be Dior with Travis’s element on top. Travis has some people working with him and there was this complete conversation going on between the studios, with everyone in different places.”

Who: Paul Smith

The Inspiration: The spirit of outdoor adventure, upbeat positivity and connection to the natural world

The Quote: “An organic colour palette leads the transition from dawn to dusk, taking in warm orange sunrise hues through to brilliant sky blues and midnight blacks. Looks are tonally coordinated to give these glorious summer colours their moment to shine. Earth tones, such asTuscan terracotta, putty and red clay, further root the collection in natural colours, while punctuation points of bright red and acid yellow cut through the palette,” the press notes read.

Louis Vuitton

Who: Louis Vuitton

The Inspiration: The logic of sampling the ready-made to create new things from the old, taking cultures and subcultures we know and highlighting their cultural context and collective re-contextualisation

The Quote: “I called the collection [Amen Break], because I think it’s so profound: this idea that something can be iterated on by so many artists in so many songs, to the point where it melts away—they weren’t compensated for it, by the way. And people don’t know that the drum pattern in their favourite song was from a very specific soul song—and it’s a sampler that makes it possible,” Virgil Abloh told Vogue.

Who: Burberry

The Inspiration: The power and the beauty of self-expression and about escaping and coming together as one to celebrate our creativity

The Quote: “I wanted the collection to capture that free spirit of youth and its honest and daring attitude, that sense of experimentation and fluidity. There is a strong feeling of unity but also of individuality – encouraging and uplifting each other to express ourselves freely. It’s a very raw energy that’s infectious, exciting and full of life. Like an awakening,” said Riccardo Tisci, chief creative officer of Burberry.

The Inspiration: The idea of clothing that frees instead of constricting, of carefree thoughts instead of carelessness, of classic as proof of progress

The Quote: “In a way, the pandemic has proved that my intuition of a timeless and effortless style has always been a valuable one. And this is exactly what I would like to convey with this collection: an idea of comfort that is more in sync with the times that we are living,” said Armani.

Who: Prada

The Inspiration: Tunnel to joy, urgency of feelings, utopia of normality

Fendi

Who: Fendi

The Inspiration: Reflections on watching the world from above

The Quote: “How you see things—and from where you see them—has never been more important. Our singular point of view in this period has modified our perception of the world—and mine has become so linked to what I see from the arches and the rooftop of our building. It is almost like a bird’s eye view of Rome from here. The colours and the perspective are always changing—the soft palette of the Roman sky across the day is so beautiful and I wanted it to be a focal point of this collection,” said Silvia Venturini Fendi, artistic director of Fendi accessories and menswear.

Who: Dolce & Gabbana

Inspiration: Light displays from the south of Italy, the handmade as “real art”

The Quote: “It’s a very Italian tradition: a celebration of light, family and artisans. This is the most important message for us today. Light is good therapy for this moment. Now we need to see light, joy and happiness in the eyes of people. That’s what we want,” said Stefano Gabbana.

Who: Brunello Cuccinelli

Inspiration: Balance, essentiality and sobriety

The Quote: “On the path traced towards rebirth, towards joyful reunions and the sharing of daily gestures, men are starting to rediscover a taste for elegance and dressing well as well as the emotions and sensations of well-being that stem from a polished, relaxed and contemporary style.

With this renewed desire for elegance, simplicity takes on a special role; because of its closeness to a natural expression of masculinity, it is capable of transmitting a message of authenticity, of positivity and of spontaneity.”

Who: Ermenegildo Zegna

Inspiration: The New Set: an evolutional, fluid code to enter the world again by keeping the connotations of tailoring in both methodology and construction while devising new forms in new fabrications, tuned to the needs of today.

The Quote: “My aim at Zegna is to create an accord between the essence of tailoring, which is our reason for being, and the rhythm of the modern world. What I have done is a rewiring of luxury crafting, following a flow that frees the man while keeping the distinctiveness, offering pieces that are easy to wear as they are inventive. Effortlessness is the key”, said Alessandro Sartori.
