The man behind the skincare favourite The Cream answers a few questions from us

If you’re an avid fan of all things beauty and skincare, chances are you’ve heard of Augustinus Bader Skincare. Globally recognised as one of the leaders in stem cell biology, Professor Augustinus Bader launched his own skincare line in 2018 and took the beauty world by storm. Born out of the intention to restore badly burned skin, Augustinus Bader Skincare adopts the same ground-breaking approach to help improve the average person’s complexion and battle typical signs of ageing and increase overall skin health.

The two hero products, The Cream and The Rich Cream, have since gained cult status, attracting celebrity attention and even spurring Victoria Beckham herself to partner with the professor to work on her debut skincare line. The products are said to help with everything from fine lines and wrinkles to age spots and redness.

Since the launch of your cult products in 2018, it's safe to say you've changed the face of skincare, but what first gave you the idea of launching your own brand?

Augustinus Bader (AB) I had never really thought of creating a consumer skincare product. It was Charles, my partner in this enterprise, who had the vision of applying the technology to skincare consumer products to fund more trials. He thought if the technology can turn burned skin into perfect skin, then a variant can probably help with wrinkles too. It took me another two years to be convinced, but I began prototyping a skincare product with certain patients with fragile or problematic skin. The creams made a genuine difference to the people, and they kept coming back, asking for more. It was then that I agreed to adopt the technology to create a skincare product for every day as opposed to just wounds.

What is the difference between The Cream and The Rich Cream, and how would you suggest an individual to determine which is best for them?

AB The skincare and skin protective benefits of The Cream and The Rich Cream are closely related—the choice of the formula is a matter of personal preference and skin type. I recommend The Cream for those with normal to oily skin and The Rich Cream for those with dry skin or for those who require extra hydration. Some people use the lighter version during the day and the rich at night. Warmer climates tend to favour the lighter version and colder climates the richer one.

Aside from using your products, what tips do you have to achieve radiant and youthful-looking skin, particularly for Asian skin types?

AB It is important to focus on skin health rather than temporary solutions such as fillers or camouflage. Ideally, we need to focus on maintaining skin health from both the inside and the outside. Our appearance is reflected in the quality of our whole lifestyle, from emotional health to nutrition and even the air we breathe. Looking after our skin, the amazing and complex living organ, is more than just vanity.

Your products are loved by celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, but what do you think makes people so interested in the brand, and how do you stand out in the Asian skincare market?

AB When you purchase Augustinus Bader products, you are investing in your skin health. This skincare product is not a filler and not makeup; it's something that is state-of-the-art and contributes in a rational, scientific way. We know how to trigger the skin to repair itself and have integrated this knowledge into the highest quality patented formulations to deliver the best results for all skin types. This is the benefit of all my medical work over the past 30 years. Whereas some moisturisers simply do their job for the day in hand, this one works to train skin in the long term. After three to four weeks of using this—and only this—you'll see a big difference in skin quality.

What's next for the brand, and are there any new products in the pipeline?

We are working hard to adjust the formulations to different areas of skin and will be launching some exciting new products very soon. All future products will always be based on our concepts of skin health, protection and care by physiologic means.
