The film is set to premiere on July 30

A24 has finally released the highly anticipated trailer of David Lowery's adaptation of the iconic 14th-century Middle English romance, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and we could not be more excited to swoon over Dev Patel who plays the beautiful and moody leading knight.

The Green Knight is a retelling of the Middle English poem that was famously translated by J.R.R. Tolkien in the 1920s. It follows Sir Gawain, who is played by Dev, as he goes on a quest to find the green knight, a warrior, and to honour a bargain he made with him.

The trailer sees Gawain meeting the Green Knight where he is offered an axe. However, to keep the axe, Gawain will have to strike the giant once. However, one year from that day, Gawain is to meet with the Green Knight to receive one blow from the warrior in return.

From the trailer, it looks like Lowery has largely kept true to the plot details of the poem but he has very clearly moved away from the magic and romance of the original story and produced a darker and more sinister version for the screen.

The first film was set to be released last year but was delayed due to the pandemic. A24 was hoping to give the movie a larger theatrical release when more cinemas began to open up. With the new trailer, A24 has announced that it will be hitting theatres this summer on July 30.

All we want to know is where this movie was when we were falling asleep over our massive copy of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight back in university.
