Filming for season five of the hit historical drama is underway though a release date has not yet been announced

The Crown is arguably one of Netflix’s most successful historical dramas with a massive fan following and it is easy to see why it has been renewed for a fifth season. In fact, the new season just began filming last month in Britain. However, what’s different this time is that a fresh cast will be taking over the roles from the previous season in order to ensure that all the actors reflect accurate ages.

This week, Netflix gave fans a sneak peek into what Imelda Staunton is going to look like as the new Queen Elizabeth II with a picture posted on their social media accounts. This is a role that Staunton will be taking over from actress Olivia Colman.

Staunton is a familiar face because she has, in the past, played famous roles such as Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter movies and she starred in the 2019 film adaptation of Downton Abbey.

Fans will also be seeing Jonathan Pryce playing the role of the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip, while Jonny Lee Miller will portray Prime Minister John Major.

The role of Princess Diana will be played by Elizabeth Debicki while Prince Charles will be played by Dominic West. These are crucial roles because the new season is set to address Princess Diana's bombshell Panorama interview on BBC.

Season five of the show is set to premiere in 2022 though an official date has yet to be announced.
