How To Celebrate International Day of Yoga 2020 at Home
Coinciding with Father’s Day, the 6th edition of the International Day of Yoga will also be celebrated this Sunday. Officially recognised by the United Nations in 2014, the unique occasion, which was proposed by prime minister of India Narendra Modi, aims to raise universal awareness of the many benefits of practising yoga. June 21, which is the summer solstice, was selected because “the date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world.”
This year, as the Covid-19 pandemic plagues countries around the world, the theme of the event is “Yoga for Health - Yoga at Home”, encouraging everyone to focus on their wellbeing while staying safe indoors. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA EVENTS
UN Official Celebration of International Day of Yoga
On June 19, from 3 pm to 4.30 pm (EDT), the Permanent Mission of India in New York will be commemorating the International Day of Yoga via a virtual event streamed on UN Web TV. Yoga gurus and therapists have created a special Yoga module for the occasion, which includes “simple Yoga exercises, breathing and meditation practices designed for all age groups to improve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.”
Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas Yogathon
In celebration of the occasion, as many as eight of Anantara’s properties from Thailand to Zambia will participate in a live-streamed Yogathon from their respective Instagram channels on June 21. The participating properties include Anantara Layan Phuket Resort, Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas, Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort, Anantara Tangalle Peace Haven Resort, Anantara Kalutara Resort, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort, Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort, The Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara. Expect everything from sun salutations and hatha yoga to guided meditation and aqua yoga. The stream begins with Anantara Layan Phuket Resort at 9 am (SGT), and you can follow the list of properties to receive notifications.
Pure Yoga: Yoga As One
Together with GetActive!SG and Lenovo Singapore, Pure Yoga is attempting to set a Guinness World Record for the highest number of people practising yoga virtually. The yoga studio’s practice will be live-streamed on its official Youtube channel, and also aims to raise funds for HealthServe, a non-profit organisation in Singapore that is dedicated to improving health conditions and rights for low-wage migrant workers. The event will take place from 3 to 4 pm on June 21.
Yogafest Virtual 2020
Originally planned for August 1 and 2, Yogafest is now slated to take place from June 20 to July 3, falling in line with the celebration of International Day of Yoga. Instead of physical mass events, the event will take place virtually instead, offering 14 days of yoga with 120 classes for practitioners of all levels. The line-up of instructors includes both international and local experts such as Liv Lo Golding from Singapore, Hiro Landazuri from Los Angeles, Fee Zard from Australia, and Victor Chau from Hong Kong. A ticket for the event is priced at $15 for a 14-day access and complimentary three months on-demand classes, with 20 per cent of proceeds donated to charities offering relief for Covid-19.
