What the prequel is about
Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the upcoming series tells the story of a turbulent period for House Targaryen, one that set sibling against sibling and dragon against dragon. The question that runs through the entire show is who should be the rightful ruler of Westeros and the Iron Throne.
Based on the book Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin, the author explains the story’s focus on the Targaryens’ occupation of Dragonstone after the Doom of Valyria on his blog, saying, “Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.”
The cast
In one of the three new photos that were released by HBO, fans get to see Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen and D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. Smith’s character is the younger brother of King Viserys and heir to the throne.
Fans will also be able to find out more about the characters of the show on HBO’s website, which includes Princess Rhaenyra, who is played by D’Arcy, is the king’s first-born child; she is of pure Valyrian blood and is a dragon rider.
Olivia Cooke plays Alicent Hightower—who is the daughter of the Hand of the King Otto Hightower—and Rhys Ifans plays Otto Hightower, who loyally and faithfully serves both his king and his realm.
The series is showcasing greater diversity in the cast with Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon who is the most famed nautical adventurer in the history of Westeros, and Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, the most trusted—and most unlikely—ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne.
