While the topic of gender inequality in the workplace isn’t new, there’s still a long way to go before it becomes a non-issue—if ever at all. According to a report by Diversity Action Committee Singapore, the number of women on the boards of Singapore Exchange-listed companies is steadily increasing each year.

However, the 9.5 per cent in 2015 remains relatively low as compared to that of Europe and the US. Thus, the Singapore Committee for UN Women continues to empower women and girls with its Snow (Say No to the Oppression of Women) campaign and annual gala. This year, the spotlight is on mavericks who have broken the gender mould.

The movement aims to garner more pledges—and not just hashtags—for the UN Women’s global HeForShe initiative and boost the uptake of educational day camps organised by Girls2Pioneers, which hopes to inspire young girls to venture into male-dominated domains such as technology and mathematics.

“Male-centred professions will always exist, and women will continue to break the barriers. Hillary Clinton, for one, is breaking political barriers by running for the US presidency,” says Trina Liang-Lin, president of the Singapore Committee for UN Women.

Themed Rebel for A Cause, the Snow Gala 2016 will be held on September 24, at Capella Singapore.
