Art exhibitions return to the city, theatres reopen their doors and organisers get creative with online events

1. Pasar Glamour

What The non-profit social enterprise helmed by homegrown actresses Petrina Kow, Janice Koh and Pam Oei returns to support the arts in Singapore by hosting its annual charity pop-up event at Crane this month. Featuring a curated array of pre-loved designer goods including shoes, bags and beauty essentials, shoppers will have to purchase a ticket to enter the event, where all the proceeds generated will go towards companies such as Pangdemonium in an effort for them to continue producing meaningful works in these challenging and unprecedented times.

2. Soles 4 Souls shoe drive

What Singapore's leading lighting company Million Lighting will collaborate with the Nashville-based charity organisation Soles4Souls to host the seventh edition of their shoe drive to continue their efforts in breaking the cycle of poverty. To date, the Singapore shoe drives have seen a total of close to half a million pairs of shoes donated, and members of the public are highly encouraged to donate footwear they have—either new or slightly worn—to further the cause.

3. V-ZUG Pop-up at Takashimaya Department Store

4. Kim Lim: Carving and Printing

What In the lead up to ART SG's inaugural edition in November 2021 at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, it will launch its first digital activation of the fair by taking gallery goers on a virtual guided tour of Singaporean-British artist Kim Lim's ongoing exhibition at the Tate Britain.

The exhibition tour will be helmed by Bianca Chu, independent curator and representative of the Kim Lim Estate and Turnbull Studio, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Patricia Chen, writer and filmmaker, featuring Johnny Turnbull, CEO of the Kim Lim Estate and Turnbull Studio, and Hammad Nasar, curator, researcher and strategic advisor. Co-founder of ART SG Magnus Renfrew will also give an introduction prior to the panel.

5. Voilah! France Singapore Festival 2020

What Celebrating the friendship between France and Singapore, this year's edition of the annual festival takes on a hybrid format with about 50 programmes, both online and offline, spanning culture, education, science and lifestyle. One highlight is an exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore commemorating the 100th anniversary of former French premier Georges Clemenceau's visit to Singapore.

6. Tuesdays with Morrie

What The seven-month wait is over! The Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) finally opens the doors of the KC Arts Centre—Home of SRT for a live performance—safe distancing measures permitting—of Mitch Albom's bestselling memoir, Tuesdays with Morrie. Directed by Samantha Scott-Blackhall, the play stars theatre veteran Remesh Panicker as the titular character, with Benjamin Chow as Mitch.

7. OCBC Cycle 2020 Virtual Race

What After the cancellation of its two-day vent in May, this annual mass participation cycling fiesta is back but has now gone online. Participants will still be cycling the full distance in the 800m, 5km, 23km or 42km categories using a fitness tracker.

8. Singapore International Photography Festival 2020

What Themed “Departing and Arriving”, the seventh edition of this biennial photography festival addresses topics of identity and belonging with exhibitions by international and local photographers such as Hou I-Ting and Vasantha Voganathan. This year, the festival also hosts the Inside Out Project—a global art project initiated by French artist JR that transforms messages of personal identity into art—where guests can expect their portraits to be captured by mobile photo booth and exhibited around the city's cultural precincts to showcase Singapore's uniquely diverse community. The Inside Out Singapore mobile photo booth will be held at various locations and participants can secure their time slots online.

9. Hydeout: The Prelude

What Originally slated for April this year, the organisers of this inaugural music festival has now taken the party online to enthral music lovers across the globe. Covering diverse music genres, the digital music platform will also feature games, chat rooms and on-demand performances by musicians such as Dutch trap‑house duo Yellow Claw (pictured right) and British singer-songwriter Rita Ora.

10. SG Gallery Weekend

What In an expression of solidarity by the arts community, over 20 local galleries including Yeo Workshop, Intersections Gallery and Chan + Hori Contemporary will open their doors—both online and off—for this inaugural art fair organised by the Art Galleries Association Singapore. There will also be workshops running alongside the gallery exhibitions.

11. Singapore International Film Festival 2020

What The 31st edition of this annual film festival returns as a hybrid event with both online and offline programmes that champion the themes of resilience, hope and community. Similar to previous editions, the festival will also host the Asian Feature and Southeast Asian Short Films Competitions, although this time with a scaled down selection of films.

12. Snow Gala 2020

What The annual fundraiser by United Women Singapore will take place online to raise funds for its local initiatives, including the Girls2Pioneers programme, which reaches out to girls from low-income and at‑risk backgrounds to pursue subjects in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
