1/5 Musical performances

Andrew Lloyd Webber

Award-winning English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has taken to Instagram to fulfil music requests by fans worldwide. His first video, which featured him playing All I Ask of You from his hit musical The Phantom of the Opera, was received with a tremendous response, including one from the famed American composer, Lin-Manuel Miranda. The two then engaged in a little friendly playoff on social media by playing hit songs from each other's broad repertoire. With tunes from Hamilton and Jesus Christ Superstar included, it's needless to say that the Broadway community was thrilled to see these two industry giants engaged a musical challenge.

Lin-Manuel Miranda

"Playoff accepted" were the first words that sparked the glorious musical exchange between American composer Lin-Manuel Miranda and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lin, who has a string of musicals including Hamilton and In The Heights under his belt, responded with his rendition of Everything's Alright, a musical number in Webber's rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar. The composer also responded in hopes of raising donations for the US-based covid-19 Assistance Fund, which dedicates financial aid for those in the performing arts and entertainment industry in these challenging times.

Diplo

Seeking to keep spirits up amidst the outbreak, California-based DJ Diplo has released a schedule of live-streamed sets for those staying in with an internet connection to access either Instagram, Twitter or Youtube. The DJ, who was among first few artists to perform live from self-isolation, has most recently been joined with American musician Dillon Francis, where the duo played a multi-genre two-hour set dubbed as "Coronight Fever" from the comfort of the producer's living room.

On top of live sets and daily updates on his exercise routine, Diplo also scheduled an important question and answer session with synthetic biologist David Sun Kong from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to spread accurate information about the current coronavirus pandemic.

Lizzo

There is no better way to get through the anxiety brought about by the pandemic than meditation, crystals, and tunes from the classical flute, according to American singer-songwriter, Lizzo. Since last week, the hip-hop music artist, who has an impressive following of 8.4 million followers on Instagram, has posted two videos of herself playing the classical flute in an effort to bring calm and positivity to her fans. The short performance was then followed by a guided meditation session for those who tuned in.

For the uninitiated, Lizzo is also a classically trained flautist who has weaved classical tunes into her music, hence transcending stereotypes of being a hip-hop and rap artist in the modern century.

Yo-yo Ma

The heartwarming online performances by acclaimed musician Yo-yo Ma has touched many of those in self-isolation. The cello maestro has kickstarted a trending series, #SongsOfComfort, in an effort to spread warmth through music in these uncertain times. First of the series posted is a piece by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák called Goin' Home, while the subsequent performance of Bach's Cello Suite No.3 was dedicated to all the healthcare workers working on the frontline.

Chris Martin

Peppered with Coldplay classics such as A Sky Full of Stars and Birds, the band's frontman Chris Martin did a 30-minute gig on Instagram last week, where he responded to a myriad of song requests from those who tuned in. Martin's live-stream marked the start of the #TogetherAtHome movement, which saw acclaimed American singer-songwriter John Legend takeover the next day, taking to the internet his new song Conversations in the Dark and a rendition of Beauty and the Beast as requested by his lovely daughter, Luna Legend.

D-Nice

Attended by the likes of Oprah, Michelle Obama, Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna, it's safe to say that this is where the (virtual) party's at. Hosted by American DJ D-Nice, Club Quarantine was in full force with approximately 100,000 live viewers at some point, as everyone soaked up the positive vibes and danced to a variety of dance hits from the comforts of their own homes. If you don't believe how good it was, well, Oprah herself even coined it the "best party of one and 100k" she's ever been to. Now, who are we to dispute that?

In case you missed the party, the DJ has a Spotify playlist to help those staying in to have a party of their own. See it here

It's been a year since Pink's iconic performance at the Brit Awards, and we still can't get over her spectacular entrance and powerful vocals in a live concert. Last week, the American singer-songwriter melted our hearts by taking to Instagram her rendition of Make You Feel My Love by Adele coupled with her newly-learnt piano scores, inspiring the rest of us common folk to take up a new instrument in this time of self-isolation.
