Brisbane received 72 yeses out of 77 valid votes, becoming the official host of the upcoming 2032 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games

It's confirmed: Brisbane in Australia is selected as the 2032 Summer Olympics host by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Brisbane received a whopping 72 yeses out of 77 valid votes. This is the first time that the Australian city will be hosting the Olympics, although Australia has hosted two Summer Olympic Games in the past—Sydney in 2000 and Melbourne in 1956.

"Brisbane 2032 is the first future host to have been elected under, and to have fully benefited from, the new flexible approach to electing Olympic hosts," says Thomas Bach, IOC president. This new flexible approach encourages potential Olympic hosts to make use of existing and temporary venues, according to Bach.

The 2032 Games is still far out but it's already scheduled to take place from July 23–August 8, followed by the Paralympic Games from September 24–September 5 across 37 venues.

"I am proud of Australia, proud of Queensland, and proud of our team that secured this win for our country. The Commonwealth Government has supported Brisbane’s candidacy for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games right from the very start," says Scott Morrison, Australia's Prime Minister.

"We believe in this bid. We know it’s a huge opportunity for our nation, just like the Melbourne Games in 1956 and the Sydney Olympics in 2000," he adds.

Before the 2032 Games kick off, Brisbane and its surrounding region are already hosting or co-hosting other sporting events such as the 2022 Fiba Women's Basketball World Cup, the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in cycling and the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup in soccer.

For the 2032 Games, The Brisbane Plan aims to use existing venues in the surrounding district zones in South East Queensland, with each zone transformed into its own unique setting. In addition to the 37 venues, there will be also six new entertainment and sports venues.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics is taking place this Friday (July 23) after a year of delay due to the pandemic. We can look forward to the next Games in Beijing 2022, Paris 2024, Milano Cortina 2026 and LA 2028 before Brisbane 2032.
