Tiffany Tan founded home and living e-tailer Cluster-Cluster three years ago in her apartment in Shanghai where she was living with her then-boyfriend, now husband Gordon Steel whom she wedded in the city’s charming Peace Hotel in April 2015.

She runs the company with the mantra: “functional, affordable, stylish and original” and this applies to the way she designs her own home as well. The merchandise ClusterCluster offers is an eclectic mix, all with a tropical design accent. It also has its own in-house brand, ClusterHome, where it works with craftsmen from around the region.

While this fulfils her design dreams, the ultimate satisfaction for Tiffany is seeing the posts customers make on social media of their newly decorated interiors or receiving calls from them raving about a product. “It lets us know that we’ve made a difference in their lives and provided them the lifestyle they’ve been longing for.” Here, she chats with us, with a negroni in hand.

“I’m a big horror movie fan and grew up watching Stephen King films, but I’ve always been too scared to read his novels. I’m currently tackling It—all 1,138 pages of it—that’s about a malevolent clown called Pennywise. My siblings and I have given ourselves a timeline to finish reading it before the movie is released in September.”

“I’m constantly hunting for DIY projects for my home. One of my recent acquisitions is a vintage electric blue baroqueinspired 2.5m teak mirror that sits in my bedroom. I’m planning to give it a new paint job soon—I’m thinking an emerald green like a 1956 Chevy.”

“My husband Gordon and I collect whisky and we especially love the timeless designs of Japanese whisky bottles. The star of our assemblage at home is the Hibiki Japanese Harmony Master’s Select saved from our wedding day. It isn’t rare, but holds many memories for us.”

“I went to central Mongolia with my husband and our friends last July, and it was amazing. We stayed in ger camps, travelled along treacherous routes, visited temples, trekked mountains… It made me feel that everyone needs moments like these to figure out who they are and the kind of person they want to be.”

“I’d like to think of luxury as a state of mind. It’s about placing together the right items in the right place and not spending ridiculous amounts of money for a luxurious blend. A little bling also always helps with bringing the glamour. In my home, for instance, I repurposed an old, golden sewing machine into a mini bar, I use copper cups with a raw wooden plate, and pair golden cutleries with striking designs.”
