As we bid 2020 farewell, here are some ideas on how you can spend the very last day of this most unusual year

There may not be big parties or major fireworks in the city area this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy New Year’s Eve to the fullest. In fact, the extraordinary circumstances may just lead you to a new experience on the final day of this challenging year.

If you’re bored and looking for things to do and places to go, here are a few suggestions that might just appeal to you, whether you prefer to head out or stay home on this special occasion.

Catch the light show at The Promontory

The usual annual New Year’s Eve fireworks at Marina Bay won’t be happening this year, due to crowd-restriction measures. But if you’d still like to hang out around the area, don’t forget to check out “Shine a Light”, a rather awe-inspiring three-minute display comprising formations of 60 beams of light projecting from The Promontory. The show is repeated every 15 minutes and is currently ongoing nightly (8pm to 10.30pm), and will end its run on 31 December (8pm to 11.45pm).

Toast the new year with endless champagne

If free-flow tipples sound like a fabulous way to spend New Year’s Eve to you, book yourself and your friends in for a special countdown drinks’ night at the stylish The Warehouse Hotel. For $168++ per guest, you can enjoy endless pours of bubbly, wine and beer. Even better, book one of the hotel’s curated room packages and spend the night there, and you won’t have to worry about driving or getting yourself safely home.

Go somewhere you’ve never been in Singapore

Or do something you’ve never done, in a place you’ve probably visited many, many times. Perhaps you might have dined at the National Gallery’s many restaurants but never actually went into the galleries to see the museum’s art—take the chance to do so with your free time.

Can’t get a reservation anywhere nice? Do something that doesn’t require a booking or queuing up for—for example, an evening stroll in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, followed by a picnic or drinks in the park grounds. There’s nothing to stop you from spontaneously enjoying nature’s sights, in spots where there’s unlikely to be a crowd.

Bliss out at a luxury spa

A rejuvenation session is requisite before 2021 begins. Treat yourself and a loved one to an indulgent spa day and splurge on the full works—in fact, why not start making it a yearly tradition? We can’t think of a better way to spend the final day of every single year, unless, of course, travelling can resume safely in the near future. Some top-notch spas to consider: Auriga Spa at Capella Singapore, Remède Spa at The St Regis Singapore, Away Spa at Sentosa, or The Banyan Tree Spa at Marina Bay Sands.

Give MasterClass a go

If you’ve already binge-watched all the shows you’ve wanted to catch on Netflix, why not switch over to content that you can actually use for self-improvement? Tick one New Year’s resolution off your list by giving the online learning platform, MasterClass, a shot. It streams short lessons conducted by the world’s most well-known professionals in various fields—be it acting, cooking, photography, writing, music, business or sports—so expect to see “instructors” including famous folks like Anna Wintour, Natalie Portman, Gordon Ramsay and Kelly Wearstler imparting their knowledge on screen. You won’t become an expert from this, of course, but it’ll be a rather entertaining way to pick up a new hobby or improve an existing skill.
