Wan Hao is a premium old-school type of Chinese restaurant that’s perfect for diners who are looking for comfort food in a slightly more upmarket environment on Orchard Road. With numerous items on the menu, a combination of “specialities” and “home-cooked food” makes for a wonderfully balanced meal. The pork ribs in mandarin orange sauce are a delight; the ribs are coated in flour and deep-fried to perfection before being glazed in sweet, tangy mandarin orange sauce. Thumbs up to the soon hock cooked in Wan Hao special superior stock, too. The 600g fish is portioned into two—half for deep-frying and half for cooking in the stock, which gives the pot a lot of wholesome goodness and texture. The fish is prepared with minimal seasoning to allow the natural juices of the ingredients to take the lead—and they do. Wine offerings are limited, as teas dominate the drinks list. Ask the friendly servers for their recommendations; they’re more than happy to help.
• Portions are labelled “small” but can be quite generous, especially the meat dishes. Be careful not to over-order; it’s okay to skip the carbs and focus on the mains.
• The restaurant has an extensive Chinese tea menu with detailed descriptions and benefits, making it easy even for tea noobs to make their selection; the teas are great for clearing the palate and cutting through the oiliness of the dishes.
