Looking more like a casual modern café (with exposed ceiling pipes) than a traditional Japanese restaurant, Omoté is known for its re-interpreted, value-for-money Japanese favourites alongside locally-inspired surprises. The seared foie gras with caramelised apple, simmered orange and pistachio makes for a memorable appetiser, with contrasting flavours and textures working harmoniously. To wake up the palate, the crispy chilli crab is a fried soft-shell crab in piquant dashi and belacan chilli sauce. It is a version of Singapore’s iconic dish that you can dive into without dirtying your fingers. The grilled salmon belly teriyaki is tender, flavourful, slightly charred and perfectly smoky. The signature yakiniku udon, a giant bowl of comforting beef noodles in an excellent stock, is usually reserved for big appetites. The service in this restaurant can be better, but the prices are reasonable for the quality of food delivered.
