The entrepreneur and tea lover shares more about turning his love for tea into a multimillion-dollar empire

If there is one thing you need to know about the CEO and co-owner of V3 Gourmet, Taha Bouqdib, it’s that he really loves tea. After all, he describes his first experience with a cup of this caffeinated beverage as “falling head over heels” for it.

“Tea always held a very important place in my life, especially growing up in Morocco where tea is a very significant component of social life,” he explains. In Morocco, where Bouqdib was born, the tradition of brewing and drinking tea signifies hospitality and friendship.

While the self-proclaimed tea enthusiast has always been drinking traditional Moroccan tea (green tea with mint and sugar), it was an aromatic and nutty cup of Lung Ching (Chinese green tea) that first ignited his passion.

Moroccan memories

He fondly recalls his first encounter with this cup: “During my childhood in Rabat, Morocco, I lived with my family next to the Chinese embassy and the embassy would often offer us calendars and Chinese tea during the Chinese holidays. This was my first discovery of tea after Moroccan green tea, a traditional tea that is usually served to welcome guests.”

A few years later while in Paris, a friend of his gave him the opportunity to dip his toes into the tea industry. There, he discovered more about the various tea harvests which he was introduced to during his youth. “This was when I realised that I will be working in the tea industry,” the French-Moroccan entrepreneur shares.

From then, he fell deeper in love with this hot beverage. Even today, his passion for tea continues stronger than ever. The tea lover enthusiastically shares how he enjoys starting his day with a pot of full-bodied black tea and unwinds by sipping on a comforting cup of Marrakech Mint tea before bed.

He adds that while his tea preferences change throughout the day, his all-time favourite is TWG Tea’s Silver Moon Tea. “It was the first exclusive tea blend which I have created for the TWG Tea Haute Couture Tea Collection … it will always have a special place in my heart,” Bouqdib says.

Choosing his destiny

Although the entrepreneur’s journey into the luxury tea industry has seemed smooth sailing so far, this wasn’t always the case. In fact, the Moroccan-born had to make a decision between following his family tradition of working for the King and venturing into the tea industry. He shared that while it was tradition, it wasn’t his “destiny”.

He got the idea to revolutionise the tea industry, with TWG Tea, during his time working in a French tea company, in 2004. The entrepreneur decided to base the company in Singapore when he visited in 2007. During that trip, he fell in love with the city, from the “roadside flowers” to his hospitable welcome into the country.

Today, 15 years after its launch, TWG Tea is one of the most well-known tea brands in Singapore and over the world, with over 70 boutiques launched in 18 countries.

When asked about how he chases his dreams, the Bouqdib shares that it is not dreams that he chases but rather, goals. He explains: “I stay committed to my goals and don’t lose sight of what I seek to achieve in the long run.” Staying true to his words, the entrepreneur had set his mind to “revolutionising the tea industry” and did just that.

It isn’t surprising that Bouqdib is able to stay committed to the goals which he has set for himself. After all, this is something which his father had taught him since young.

“I have taken a lot of important lessons from my father in discipline, hard work and respect ... he has been the root of my rigour and self-discipline, and I continue to use that drive which he had instilled in me as fundamentals to building a luxury brand,” he adds.

On top of his father’s life lessons, his first job at the Moroccan Royal Police had also taught him discipline, rigour and the importance of working hard—these lessons are still ingrained in him today.

After successfully dominating the luxury tea industry, Bouqdib turned his sights towards the burgeoning coffee industry and thus created his latest concept Bacha Coffee in 2017. “I was in Marrakech with the King of Morocco, when I first learned of the heritage brand at the historical palace of Dar el Bacha, which means “house of the Pasha”. The story captivated me in an instant. I was fascinated by its history and was interested to revive it on a global scale,” Bouqdib says.

As he was already based in Singapore and had seen the island’s booming coffee culture, he decided to open Bacha Coffee’s first international post here. It has since expanded into seven outlets across the island, including three located within different terminals at Changi Airport.

And so, it is without a doubt that Bouqdib loves what he does and he’s not stopping any time soon when it comes to pursuing his passion. After all, you never really forget your first love, do you?
