To celebrate our 40th anniversary, we thought long and hard about who could encapsulate our values and we arrived at one worthy candidate: the indomitable Betty Chen
How do you choose an appropriate theme to encapsulate 40 years of society, style and social impact? It’s a question I’ve been asking myself since taking over the reins of the magazine this year, and I’m pretty sure only one word is powerful enough to be equal to such a momentous occasion: legendary.
Looking back on our covers and tag lines through the years—“Life. Extraordinary”; “The Spirit of High Society”—as well as the role that Tatler has played in chronicling and shaping Singapore’s social landscape (I believe we’re the only magazine that Singapore’s founding father Lee Kuan Yew has namechecked in his memoirs—look it up on page 288 of Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going), I was convinced I was right.
And so we invited the incredible Betty Chen to star on our cover. A lifelong philanthropist, the patron emeritus of Henderson Senior Citizens’ Home has served as president of the Chinese Women’s Association for a whopping 26 years, raising millions in funds for the less fortunate and the deserving within the community.
