A moderniser who's been the nation’s Chief Justice for almost a decade

Sundaresh Menon has served in his role as Singapore’s fourth Chief Justice since 2012. He has spent over three decades in the legal arena in both private practice and the public service, and is known for his efforts in promoting access to justice.

Menon graduated with first-class honours in law from the National University of Singapore, and later obtained his Master of Laws degree from Harvard University, USA. He joined law firm Shook Lin & Bok as a legal assistant in 1987, and was promoted to be partner three years later. Menon left to co-found WongPartnership in 1992, and also worked at Rajah & Tann and Jones Day in subsequent roles. His areas of focus included insolvency law, construction law, and commercial litigation and arbitration.

He left private practice to become a Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court in 2006. He subsequently served as Singapore’s sixth Attorney-General, a Judge of Appeal and finally Chief Justice.

Menon, who is also President of the Singapore Academy of Law, is married with three children. In March 2021, he was appointed as a member of the International Chamber of Commerce governing body for dispute-resolution services on a two-year term.
