A former military man and Singapore’s chief scientist, Frederick Chew, now leads the A*Star agency researching tech advances

Frederick Chew is the CEO of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star), the Singaporean public-sector agency tasked with engaging in research for technological advancement and scientific means.

The ex-navy admiral oversees a team of over 5,000 employees, and is responsible for setting the agency’s strategic goals, implementing strategies, building the firm’s organisational capabilities, and engaging industry and government stakeholders.

Chew, a recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship and Fulbright Award, has held a number of leadership positions in the Singapore Armed Forces as well as the Ministry of Defence. These include including Director of Joint Operations, Commander of Command and Head of Naval Plans. He was also in charge of the SAF task groups deployed to the Gulf of Aden off Yemen as part of Operation Blue Sapphire in 2011 and 2012.

Chew also sat on the boards of DSO National Laboratories, which is Singapore’s national defence research agency; and the Defence Science and Technology Agency.
