Vestiaire Collective’s Sophie Hersan on the power of old clothes

For anyone who values sustainability in fashion and loves vintage finds, Vestiaire Collective should probably be a well-loved source. The Paris-based luxury resale site has played an important role in the pre-loved luxury fashion space since 2009. This week, we’re featuring Sophie Hersan, Vestiaire Collective’s co-founder and fashion director, as our newsletter cover star. Read our interview with her as she shares how the website was birthed after she decided to confront her overconsumption of clothing.

“It didn’t make sense anymore how the industry was run by excess and overproduction,” she tells us. In 2021, the company was valued to be at least US $1.7 billion—and to think this billion-dollar idea for the company came out of a closet.

Karana, a whole-plant-based meat startup from Singapore using jackfruit as its main ingredient, has expanded to New York City. 

The company is known for its minced jackfruit, made into dishes and products used by restaurants. In the Big Apple, it launched in partnership with Plantega, a plant-based bodega chain, on May 25.
