Taking Chances

Taking over a family business comes with its fair share of challenges. In today’s fast-paced business landscape in Singapore, second-generation entrepreneurs are emerging as dynamic leaders who build upon the legacies of their predecessors while adding a touch of innovation. One shining example is Su-Mae Chia, a former corporate lawyer who left her career to join her family business, HDI Family of Companies, a bee-wellness brand selling supplements. Like her, many of HDI’s customers have witnessed the beneficial effects of these products and have always requested a line of bee-ingredient-based skincare.

Rather than relying on her family’s success, Chia decided to carve her own path as a second-generation entrepreneur. So in 2016, Chia launched Bskin, a skincare brand that uses natural and ethically sourced bee-based active ingredients.

Nomination call: Blue Water Heroes Awards 2023

Winners of the inaugural Blue Water Heroes in 2022: Dr Louisa Ponnampalam of The MareCet Research Organization took third place last year, Thanda Ko Gyi of Myanmar Ocean Project in second place and Melati Riyanto Wijsen of Bye Bye Plastic Bags and Youthtopia in first place.

The Blue Water Heroes is back for the second year. Organised by ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove Singapore and powered by Tatler Gen.T, the annual awards recognises environmental champions who have dedicated their careers and lives to protecting the waters of Southeast Asia and the communities that rely on them.

The aim of Blue Water Heroes is to raise awareness of the importance of marine and coastal conservation in the region and catalyse the impact of these inspiring individuals through access to capital and networks.

This year’s Blue Water Heroes is now accepting nominations. Ten finalists will be selected to participate in a pitch competition on October 10 and three of them will be announced as the winners at a ceremony on November 3, 2023, at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove Singapore.

The judging panel for this year comprises executives and environmental experts from ONE°15 Marina, Singapore Management University, National University of Singapore’s Tropical Marine Science Institute, and Tatler Gen.T.

The awards are part of the three-day Blue Water EduFest, a first-of-its-kind festival in the region that brings together advocates, conservationists, experts and other key stakeholders of the sector to participate in talks, showcases, beach cleanups and more.

Ever since she was a child, Nur Aida Noor Hashim dreamt of joining an airline cabin crew and jet-setting off to a new destination every so often. But the inspiration for this particular career didn’t come from flashy airline commercials, a character in a favourite childhood movie, or even a post on social media; instead, it was her mother’s career as an air stewardess for a local airline in the 80s.
