Kim’s father, Kim Chung-hoon, was the frontman and lead singer of the 80s underground rock band Seven Dolphins. During the band’s heyday, the band made bank from their fees, often exceeding KRW5 million per performance. The elder Kim later embarked on his solo career, releasing a handful of successful singles.

Kim’s half-sister, Kim Ju-na, is a soloist signed under Hidden Sound. She’s best known for being a contestant in the first season of the popular reality competition show, Produce 101. As an artist, she has recorded OSTs for K-dramas such as How Can I, Without You (High Society, 2015), A Move of God (Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, 2017), and Our Tears (Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, 2017)

In August 2021, she opened a fashion store in Seoul called N.68.

During his early schooling years, Kim’s mother encouraged him to explore acting classes to help him overcome his shy and introverted personality. His first major acting gig was in a stage play of Shakespeare’s comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which he took on the role of Puck. Acting in a play was a transformative experience for Kim as he felt like he “became a different person”, and the positive reactions from the audience inspired him to pursue acting as a career.

In 2011, he became a household name after starring in the teen drama, Dream High. As the only young actor in a cast of idols such as Bae Suzy (Miss A), Ok Taec-yeon (2PM), Hahm Eun-jung, Jang Wooyoung (2PM), and IU, Kim studied song and dance for three months at JYP Entertainment to pull off the singing and dancing scenes. He also recorded a solo song, Dreaming, for the K-drama’s OST.

His popularity skyrocketed when he starred as Lee Hwon, the Crown Prince of Joseon, in the period K-drama Moon Embracing the Sun. Because it was exported to various Asian countries, it became one of the most profitable exports in the drama genre. Kim’s vocals can be heard in the K-drama’s OST, in the traditional ballad Only You and in the modern composition Another Way. He also won the Best New Actor - Television award at the 48th Baeksang Arts Awards for his performance.

Not only was the K-drama very well received, but he also released two singles for the K-drama’s OST–In Front of Your House and Promise—which became massively popular across Asia. He won the Daesang (“Grand Prize”), the highest award for television, at the 7th Korea Drama Awards and Most Popular Actor - Television at the 50th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Other honourable mentions include Secretly, Greatly (2013), The Producers (2015), It’s Okay to Not Be Okay (2020), One Ordinary Day (2021), and Queen of Tears (2024). Queen Of Tears is currently the second most-watched tvN K-drama after the 2019 hit K-drama, Crashing Landing On You.
