A new year, a new sling of shows to watch

Streaming giant Netflix is set to welcome 2023 with exciting new shows for everyone. Done with your favourite series and looking for new titles to explore? 

Big shows like The Sandman and Wednesday were all the rage in 2022 and while they may not appear for a second season in 2023, you can always count on Netflix for exciting new lineups every month. Whether it is a show for adults or children, look out for these dramas and shows next month. Make sure you reserve some Friday nights for binge-watching.

1. The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House

From January 12, immerse yourself in the alluring charm of Old Kyoto through the lens of two inseparable friends. Their dream of becoming maiko (an apprentice geisha) takes a turn as different hobbies and interests start shifting their passions. The series is based on Maiko in Kyoto: From the Maiko House, a popular graphic novel by Koyama Aiko. 

2. Jung_E

South-Korean sci-fi action drama Jung_E will soon plunge audiences into a post-apocalyptic 22nd century scene. At the height of the civil war, an artificial intelligence (AI) researcher attempts to clone the brain of a soldier. Starring leading names in the industry including Kang Soo-yeon and Ryoo Kyung-soo, the capabilities of AI in the age of crisis will be explored. 

3. Bling Empire: New York

Glitzy, outrageous, and opulent. Bling Empire: New York is the newest kid on the block for the popular Bling Empire reality series. The spin-off takes the series to the Big Apple and features a whole new ensemble of crazy rich South Asian billionaires. Watch as health professionals, actors, models, and influencers come together in the series to share their ultra-luxe lifestyles. 

4. The Pale Blue Eye

Starring Christian Bale as detective Augustus Landor in 1830s New York, The Pale Blue Eye enlists the help of a famous American writer. Landor, with the help of a young Edgar Allan Poe, investigates a series of murders at the United States Military Academy. Fans of Poe see their favourite writer come (back) to life in this mystery thriller film.  

5. The Croods: A New Age

Missed it in cinemas? The Croods: A New Age drops on Netflix on January 14 for your Tatlings. The second installation of the popular children’s animated film The Croods, the first prehistoric family now faces another big challenge: another family. Perhaps also the first prehistoric family feud, watch as the two families try to coexist with one another. 

6. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

Another animated film on this list is The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Mr Krabs has been accused of stealing King Neptune’s crown. A must-watch for all who love the yellow sponge, the film follows Spongebob and Patrick as they set out on an adventure to prove Mr Krabs’ innocence. 

7. Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre

Netflix’s upcoming horror anime takes the form of Junji Ito. The anime is based on the chilling stories Ito, a Japanese horror manga artist. The anime will be bringing to life a total of 20 Ito stories including Tomie: Photo and The Strange Hikizuri Siblings.

8. Pamela, A Love Story

Pamela Anderson, a Canadian-American actress and model who famously posed for Playboy magazine and starred in the iconic US drama series Baywatch, is back with a new documentary on Netflix. The documentary will contain personal videos and diaries where Anderson shares her rise to fame, turbulent relationships, and the infamous sex tape scandal. Anderson will also comment on streaming platform Hulu’s drama mini-series (which was apparently made without her approval) Pam & Tommy.

9. Old Enough!: Season 2

Arguably the cutest show on Netflix, season two unscripted Japanese variety show Old Enough! will be back on Netflix. The series follows Japanese children as they run errands for their families, including buying groceries, folding clothes, and cooking dinner. 

10. Ginny & Georgia: Season 2

American comedy drama series Ginny & Georgia will be back on Netflix for a second season on January 5. The upcoming season may hold some answers to the many cliffhangers audiences were stuck with in season one. One thing we know for sure is the return of diverse characters and relatable situations.
