Four movies directed by Asian directors have made it to the Berlin International Film Festival’s lineup

The Berlin International Film Festival has just unveiled its full selection lineup which includes four movies by Asian directors in the main competition. The 2022 edition of the Berlinale is going ahead with its planned in-person event from February 10–20.

Prolific South Korean director Hong Sang-soo is making his ninth return to the festival with his 27th feature, The Novelist’s Film. The movie also marks Hong’s sixth film in competition and has previously won three awards there: one Silver Bear for Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actress for Kim Min-hee.

After impressing critics with her Toronto International Film Festival entry Yuni, as well as her acclaimed debut The Mirror Never Lies, Indonesia director Kamila Andini’s Nana (Before, Now & Then), is also selected in the main competition. The 2022 Berlinale is her first appearance at the festival.

Considered a rising star in China’s independent cinema, director Li Ruijun has also earned a spot at the main competition for his film, Yin Ru Chen Yan (Return to Dust). The director is lauded for shedding a light on the relationship between people and the land. He has graced the cinemas of Cannes and IFFR and now, the Berlinale.

Finally, Cambodian film director Rithy Panh’s Everything Will Be Ok is also part of the main competition selection. The French-schooled director’s work focuses on the aftermath of the genocide of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia. His Belinade entry is the only documentary on the lineup.

The M. Night Shyamalan-led competition jury will select the winners of the Golden Bear and Silver Bear. See below for the full Berlin Film Festival lineup.
