Every issue, we ask our cover star a round of rapid-fire questions that give us a little more insight into their personalities. This month, Tommy Fung lays it bare

Favourite mode of transport?
The Star Ferry and the “ding ding” [tram]. When I’m not hurrying to work, I enjoy the slower pace of life these historic modes of transport offer.

Favourite colour?
Red. It attracts attention. Even my glasses are red.

Favourite Hong Kong dishes?
Egg waffles and egg tarts. They’re part of my childhood memories. I particularly like this one shop in Shau Kei Wan— there is always a long queue.

Bucket list destination?
Kyoto, for all its historic architecture.

Most memorable destination?
Hokkaido. It’s so beautiful when it snows.

Best place to work?
Home. I focus best there. But I get the best inspiration when I’m out and about.

Coffee or tea?
Bubble tea.

Favourite animal to include in your art?
Pandas.

Fastest artwork you’ve ever produced?
In March, a Kwai Chung refuse collection point went viral when someone took a photo of the paintings hung on the wall. Soon after, the paintings were taken down. I took photos at the site the next morning, then added images of famous works, as if they had been thrown away. I published my Instagram post within a few hours.

What would you be if you weren’t a designer?
An architect. But I don’t like maths. Maybe that’s why I became a designer.

Life motto?
Make the ordinary extraordinary.
