Clockenflap, which is sometimes considered as Asia’s answer to Coachella, returns to Hong Kong after a three-year hiatus due to pandemic restrictions. The festival is known for bringing in international and regional names to the city and putting both rising and established local names to the stage. This year, the three-day event will feature more than 100 acts, including English rock band Arctic Monkeys, US hip-hop legends Wu-Tang Clan, Japanese girl gang Chai and Hong Kong singer songwriter Tyson Yoshi.

2. India: Sunburn

The annual electronic dance music festival has grown from a three-day event in 2007 to a big bash that features a wide range of music and entertainment across India. Over the years, it has hosted the likes of Swedish DJ Avicii, French DJ David Guetta and American electronic DJ and production duo The Chainsmokers. This year, Sunburn is touring across India through cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Kolkata. One of the performers to catch is Dutch DJ Martin Garrix, who was ranked number one on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs list for three consecutive years until 2018. Another highlight is Road to Ultra, a signature single-stage music extravaganza founded by the team behind EDM festival, Ultra Music Festival.

3. Japan: Knotfest

The two-day heavy metal and counterculture festival returns to Japan for the first time in seven years. Headlining the event this year is nine-member American metal band Slipknot, which founded this festival in 2012, and is known for its creepy-looking clown masks, aggressive music and energetic, almost chaotic live shows. Over the years, Knotfest has been held as both a touring and destination festival in Australia, the US, Canada, Mexico, Germany, France and Chile.

The summer festival of music, arts, fashion and food has taken place every year in Jakarta, Indonesia, since 2014 and has seen electrifying acts by performers such as British Albanian musician Dua Lipa, Hong Kong rapper Jackson Wang and New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde. The in-person event this year will see the return of Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi, who was nominated for Brit Award for the Song of the Year this year, and English pop rock band The 1975.

5. Japan: Summer Sonic

This festival started in 2000 as the first in Japan to be held simultaneously in two major cities, Kanto and Kansai. In 2007, it invited American music group Black Eyed Peas to headline its first hip-hop act. The 20th anniversary edition in 2019, held in Tokyo and Osaka, was attended by 300,000 people.

This year Summer Sonic comes back to Tokyo and Osaka.
