With David Hockney's exhibition, "Through the Eyes of the Artist ", opening in Singapore next month, we can barely wait for July 1 to roll around so we can gawk at the works of one of the decade's best artists. Singapore, however, is not the only place in the world that will be hosting Hockney's work, so if waiting for another excruciating week doesn't seem like it's worth it, check out some pieces at the Getty exhibition for a head-start!

Called "Happy Birthday, Mr. Hockney," the Getty's exhibition opens on June 27, less than a week after the opening of a Hockney retrospective at Paris's Centre Pompidou. The latter show arrives in Paris on June 21 after closing in London, and before moving on to New York in November. The two-part Getty exhibition will include a selection of self-portraits, both drawn and photographic, covering six decades of Hockney's career, up to the artist's iPad studies made in 2012. In a second section, a selection of Hockney's photographs from the 1980s will take center stage, with Polaroid composites and photo collages anticipating the digital techniques made possible by computer software.

Hockney's images of Los Angeles have become synonymous with the light-filled city and will take center stage at the Getty, notably the masterpiece "Pearblossom Hwy., 11-18th April 1986, #2," last shown in 2008. That work depicts a desert road in California's Antelope Valley and shows influences of Pop art and Cubism.

"Self-Portraits" opens June 27, while "Photographs" will follow on July 18, and both will be on view through November 26.
