The Smart Devices From CES 2019 That We Want In Our Homes
We round up 8 of our favourites that will prepare your home for the future of smart living
1/8 Samsung The Wall TV
Samsung truly embraces the term “go big, or go home” at the CES this year, unveiling its massive 219-inch MicroLED television. The modular-concept screen made its CES debut last year at 146 inches, and the Korean tech giant has managed to expand on their innovation. Customisable to any size with individual bezel-less panels, just add or move a module and the screen will adapt. With AI-upscaling technology and peak brightness of 2,000 nits each, the picture quality is simply stunning.
When not in use, the TV can act as a feature wall and art display, or simply blend into the wall. A dedicated tablets allows users to control the display and search for content, though Samsung’s new panels will come equipped with its Bixby assistant, and is also compatible with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
2/8 Kohler Numi 2.0 Smart Toilet
Touted by Kohler as the world’s smartest bathroom, Numi 2.0 is the intelligent toilet you never knew you needed. As if RGB ambient lighting, built-in surround sound speakers, and a PureWarmth toilet seat that warms up to your preferred temperature wasn’t enough, the bathroom comes equipped with Amazon Alexa—in case you need someone to talk to on the toilet. You can also ask Alexa to play your favourite playlist, change the lighting, or update you on the news and weather. The cherry on top? Every member in the household can have their customised preset, so you’ll alway have the perfect temperature, pressure, and ambience when you get in the shower.

3/8 Ring Door View Camera
Ring’s fifth doorbell offering is your peephole, but better. A video doorbell that is easy to install and battery powered, it sits where your existing peephole is, so you can still see who’s at your door the good ol’ fashioned way. Tied up with something else? The wireless camera will transmit the video feed to your phone in full HD, and allow you to directly communicate with whoever is at your door. For added security, the camera can also detect motion in your doorway, and comes with an impact sensor that will alert you if there are knocks or attempted forced entry, so your home is safe even if you are away.
4/8 LavvieBot Litter Box
Pet tech has been on the rise, so of course, there’s something to help pet owners with something we all dread—cleaning poo. The LavvieBot is a self cleaning litter box that bags your cat’s waste, refills the tray, and notifies you when the waste drawer is full, or if you are running low on cat litter. The dedicated app also sends you notifications when your cat is using the LavvieBot, and keeps track of the frequency and length of each use so you can stay on top of your cat’s health. Have more than one cat? The bot can recognise Max from Tigger—if they weigh more than 680 grams apart.

5/8 KitchenAid Smart Oven+
It may not be the first smart oven in the market, but the KitchenAid Smart Oven+ does so much more. On top of voice assistant integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant—which appears to be a must-have for all smart home products in 2019—the oven can also be controlled using the KitchenAid app. A 4.5-inch LCD touch-screen allows you to plan meals and check out recipes using the Yummly app, so don’t worry if you are new to cooking. Home cooks looking to expand their repertoire on the other hand can invest in the grill, steamer, and baking stone attachments to whip up something new with ease.
Here’s one more thing a lot of us aren't a fan of—folding the laundry. Thankfully, googling the fastest and most efficient ways to fold your clothes will soon be a thing of the past, because this robot will fold them for you in less than five minutes. The concept debuted at CES 2018 last year, but now it is fully functioning and "will fold most types of shirts, blouses or pants from age 6 to adult size XXL”, as well as towels and pillowcases. The machine looks about the size of an office printer, and all you have to do is feed the clothing continuously as they magically transform into a neat stack of folded garments. Definitely a dream come true for everyone who does their laundry.

7/8 Daikin One+
We know Daikin as one of the world’s largest air conditioning (HVAC) manufacturer, and the Japanese brand’s smart thermostat is about to change the game further. Boasting a gorgeous touchscreen interface and a sleek dial, the One+ communicates with your air conditioning system so you can adjust the temperature, set automated schedules, activate energy-saving and also view air quality information. There is also geo-fencing support, so your thermostat can switch between away and home mode when it senses no one home. Naturally, it also works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can literally speak to your air conditioner.
8/8 Lockly Secure Pro
Keys may still be the tried and tested way to secure your homes, but Lockly’s Secure Pro offers added convenience, eliminating the time you normally take to dig through your pouch or pockets for keys. The smart lock offers five ways to access your door—via a physical key, a key pad, a fingerprint scan, Lockly’s dedicated app, or with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant voice commands. What makes its key pad extra secure is that the OLED display generates groups of numbers in random positions, so no one can peek and memorise your passcode. For guests, you can set custom access codes and duration periods to easily manage entry into your home. And for those days when you need to be alone? You can turn on the “do not disturb” mode so that entry is only possible with a physical key.
