The new Maserati Quattroporte gets a host of latest-generation active safety technology as standard on the inside and much sharper, striking lines on the outside. However, the biggest change is in positioning — it’s been split in two.

The Quattroporte has always been marketed as a single car that blends almost supercar potency with executive space and luxury but now it’s being offered as two distinct models — the GranLusso and the GranSport.

The GranLusso’s emphasis is on luxury. Exterior details are picked out in brightwork and spoilers are more subtle. Inside, the cabin has been dressed by Ermenegildo Zegna with silks, leather and highest quality wooden trim.

Plump for the GranSport instead and owners will get larger more aggressive air intakes, larger wheels, red brake calipers and an optional black gloss radiator grille finish on the outside.

The interior is also more focused on speed and performance. It is dressed in carbon fiber and piano black wood veneers while the front seats are built for sport and for offering support at the limit.

Both models are available with the same Ferrari-developed 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 — good for 530hp, 0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 310km/h. For those that like to take things a bit more gently, there’s a slightly less potent Ferrari-produced twin-turbo V6 available too. That offers a ‘mere’ 410hp and a 0-100km/h time of 5.1 seconds.
