Better air for better health

We may be safe from the dangers of Covid-19 as we stay home during this circuit breaker period, but it's important to ensure that our living space is clean and healthy too. Especially in enclosed spaces where airflow is restricted, air-borne bacteria and viruses can thrive, causing colds, cases of flu, and allergies—some of the last things we want to deal with during this critical time.

Air purifiers help to improve the quality of indoor air, eliminating these contaminants and allergens, as well as fine particles, odours and harmful gases that can compromise our respiratory health. The most popular ones on the market feature ionic filters, which creates ion clusters to trap these air-borne particulates or High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, which are preferred for their ability to remove more than 99 per cent of ultra-fine particles that are hard to capture. The best air purifiers feature both in a multi-step filtration system to eliminate air pollutants of different sizes and types.

If you're looking to give your home an upgrade for cleaner, healthier air, check out these high-performers below.

Dyson Pure Cool Cryptomic

Most people are familiar with the prowess of Dyson’s blade-less purifier fans (even Queen Elizabeth has one), but the tech company’s latest innovation takes it up a notch with its Cryptomic technology, which is designed to destroy “formaldehyde at a molecular level”, breaking it down into water and carbon dioxide.

A respiratory irritant emitted by numerous household products, formaldehyde is 500x smaller than ultra-fine PM0.1 particles. The Dyson Pure Cool Cryptomic’s 360-degree filtration system also removes up to 99.95 per cent of particles including pollen, allergens, industrial emissions, gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air, circulating a purified airflow throughout the room for cooler, cleaner air in your home. You can also monitor the air quality and remotely control the fan via the Dyson Link app.

LG PuriCare 360° Air Purifier

If you already have an LG ThinQ smart home system in place, this PuriCare 360° Air Purifier makes the perfect addition to your automated home network so you can keep track of your air quality and manage the filters. Boasting a 360-degree purification system, this purifier cleans the air through a six-step filter to filter out over 99 per cent of ultra-fine particles and eliminate allergens and dust, as well as odours and harmful gases like ammonia, formaldehyde and smog.

In addition to a HEPA filter, the Puricare 360° also features antibacterial nano-ions which absorbs airborne bacteria and transforms them into water. Then, the Clean Booster delivers the filter clean air to up to eight metres away.

Sharp FP-J80E-H Air Purifier

With a coverage area of 62 metres square, Sharp’s FP-J80E-H Air Purifier is great for apartments or large living spaces in your home. Equipped with Sharp’s Plasmacluster technology, the air purifier releases positive and negative ions to create clusters of viruses, bacteria and mould and neutralises them into water, removing 99 per cent of airborne contaminants. The Plasmacluster ions also help to reduce static electricity and beautify the skin by maintaining moisture.

Sharp’s air purifier also features a three-step filer system that includes a pre-filter for larger dust particles, deodorising filter, for common household odours such as cigarette and pet odours, and an electrostatic HEPA filter to trap 99.97 of microscopic particles in the air. The smart air purifier allows you to remotely control and monitor air quality, and can also adjust its settings automatically based on air quality.

Philips Series 3000i Air Cleaner AC3259/30

Equipped with Philips’ AeraSense sensor, which continuously monitors the air quality and reconfigures its settings accordingly, and the VitaShield Intelligent Purification System (IPS) with NanoProtect HEPA filter, this smart air purifier effectively removes up to 99.97 per cent of ultra-fine airborne particles, allergens and bacteria, as well as odours, formaldehyde, and VOCs.

It is especially suitable for allergy sufferers, as tested by the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation and is popular amongst people who are asthmatic. The Air Cleaner comes with three automatic settings: a General mode, an extra-sensitive Allergen mode, and an extra powerful Bacteria and Virus mode; and five manual speed settings from the quiet ‘Sleep’ mode to the powerful ‘Turbo Speed’ mode. It can be controlled via an app as well.
