Usher in the Lunar New Year with a dose of inspiring art by eminent local and international artists at the Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts.

Spring is the season of new beginnings and time to take stock of what’s meaningful in our lives. This Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay sets the ball rolling with the 13th edition of Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts. Featuring works that aim to inspire one to live life to the fullest, the festival is packed with a line-up of theatre, dance and music performances and workshops by renowned artists.

Leading the pack is celebrated Hong Kong director Edward Lam, whose latest work What is Sex? is a modern and subversive take on the Chinese classic, Dream of the Red Chamber. Dance doyen Lin Hwai-min brings Rice, a dance work presented by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, inspired by the rice fields in Taiwan’s Chihshang. And ladies, make a date with mum to Chinese composer and conductor Tan Dun’s Nu Shu – The Secret Songs of Women, on the only existing language today used by females.

You also don’t want to miss Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO)’s Savage Land – An Opera in Concert, a Chinese language Western-style opera, adapted from Chinese playwright Cao Yu’s classic play, The Wilderness. SCO’s music director Tsung Yeh and theatre director Goh Boon Teck brings you on a heart-wrenching journey through music and song. Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts is from February 20 till March 1.
